Publisher's summary

A New York Times and USA Today bestseller

From New York Times bestselling author of The Perfect Marriage and You Shouldn’t Have Come Here comes a chilling family thriller about the (sometimes literal) skeletons in the closet.

After their mother passes, three estranged siblings reunite to sort out her estate. Beth, the oldest, never left home. She stayed with her mom, caring for her until the very end. Nicole, the middle child, has been kept at arm’s length due to her ongoing battle with a serious drug addiction. Michael, the youngest, lives out of state and hasn’t been back to their small Wisconsin town since their father ran out on them seven years before.

While going through their parents’ belongings, the siblings stumble upon a collection of home videos and decide to revisit those happier memories. However, the nostalgia is cut short when one of the VHS tapes reveals a night back in 1999 that none of them have any recollection of. On screen, their father appears covered in blood. What follows is a dead body and a pact between their parents to get rid of it, before the video abruptly ends.

Beth, Nicole, and Michael must now decide whether to leave the past in the past or uncover the dark secret their mother took to her grave.

Really Predictable… Kept Hoping it Would Change

Ok story, solid performances, no intrigue. Tried for shock value, and that’s it. Knew who the bad character was from minute one. Kept hoping that a twist would come or something would change. Oh well. Maybe next time.

Excellent cast, ok story

I'm a big fan of Jeneva's books but this one missed the mark a bit. The cast was excellent and did a great job with each character. The book lacks something that I can't quite explain. It just fell flat and felt like maybe she rushed it. The story was very predictable and feels like a story that's been told before. The ending was very dull as well. Overall it was ok but I know it could have been so much better.

Excellent from beginning to end. Amazing Author!

This story is relatable to everyone whose had the pleasure of living with a family with an abundance of both love and imperfection.

Fun, if a little predictable, but the wrap-up at the end killed it for me

Not great, not awful. Story was fun to follow, and I definitely would've rated the book higher, despite its predictability, if the last two chapters hadn't been so saccharine. The ending was so cheesy that it undercut how much I enjoyed the rest of the story.

Interesting idea, poorly developed characters.

I really like the premise of this book, but wasn’t impressed with the writing or performances. Lots of time listening to characters complain about each other and their lives with little development to make them compelling. These are siblings, but there’s not much of a hint that this is a family or ever was one. If the author spent more time showing them as children or as having a connection to each other before we meet them, I’d be more likely to care about how miserable they are now.

The narrators, with the exception of the narrator for Lora, are very bitter and melodramatic to the point of annoyance. Especially the narrator for Michael, who sounds like he’s almost snarling. I’m not finishing this one. Folks who came looking for a solid haunted house/family read should check out Tananarive Due’s The Good House.
