When Emily Ratajkowski’s ex-husband Sebastian Bear-McClard proposed in 2018, he gave her a toi et moi engagement ring. Nearly two years after the former couple got divorced, the model converted the two-stone sparkler into “divorce rings,” setting a trend that other newly-single women can follow suit. While many previously married people often return the piece to their former spouse (or sell it), others repurpose it, so it takes on a new meaning. Revamping the original into a brand-new ring (or in this case, rings) is the route that Ratajkowski took.

In an Instagram post on March 19, 2024, Ratajkowski revealed the details behind her two divorce rings. She posted several images of herself showcasing the jewels, a pear-shaped solitaire stone on a gold band and another princess-cut diamond flanked by two trapezoid-shaped gems set in the same metal.

Based on the post, it appears that Ratajkowski worked with Alison Chemla Chetrit, the owner of fine jewelry brand Alison Lou that created her engagement ring, to repurpose the piece. The designer and Ratajkowski supposedly took the original two-stone sparkler, which the model kept after her divorce, and turned it into two separate rings.

The company’s Instagram reposted a few of the My Body author’s photos and shared more insight into the process. “We made the original two-stone engagement ring that set the trend…Here we go again @emrata Divorce Rings,” the caption said. The message even included the trademark symbol after “divorce rings,” signifying its originality.

Bear-McClard first popped the question with a toi et moi ring, featuring a two-carat princess-cut diamond and a three-carat pear-shaped diamond on a yellow gold band that Lou designed. According to Page Six, the rock had an estimated value of $50,000 to $90,000. After Bear-McClard got down on one knee, the duo secretly married in 2018. Three years later, the former married couple welcomed a child, Sylvester. They filed for divorce in September 2022, and now co-parent their son.
