Julia Roberts Wants to Do a “My Best Friend’s Wedding” Sequel

Queueing up a wedding movie full of heartwarming love stories and dreamy décor or funny wedding planning truths and relatable interpersonal drama is one of the best ways to get inspired for your own affair or simply feel validated. There are so many iconic films that focus on nuptials as the main plot line, but one wedding-related romantic comedy that stands the test of time is the ‘90s motion picture My Best Friend’s Wedding, starring Julia Roberts, Dermot Mulroney, and Cameron Diaz.

On December 7, 2023, Roberts revealed that out of every movie she’s ever acted in, she’d love making a sequel to that beloved 1997 rom-com the most. During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, a viewer asked the Oscar-winning actress what is the one film she would consider making a follow-up to. “That’s a really good question, and I’ve never been asked it,” Roberts said. She proceeded to share her answer: My Best Friend’s Wedding. 

In the box office hit, Jules Potter (played by Roberts) realizes she’s in love with her long-time friend Michael O’Neal (played by Mulroney) after he announces he’s engaged to Kimmy (played by Diaz) and going to marry her in the next four days. Jules then spends those few days trying to break up Michael’s wedding, which even includes faking an engagement to her gay best friend George (played by Rupert Everett). In the end, Michael stays with Kimmy, but Jules gains some wisdom and acceptance. 

Since the movie is full of character dynamics and storylines, Roberts says she would enjoy the chance to continue exploring them. “There’s so many people in it,” she explained of her choice. Roberts added that she’d be curious “to see what they’re doing and how Kimmy and Michael’s marriage is going.” Another viewer of the show asked Roberts who she thought Michael should have ended up with. “Well, I mean, of course Jules,” she revealed. “But he married Kimmy!”

Mulroney also previously revealed that he’s been adamant about continuing to tell the story of My Best Friend’s Wedding. “I’m certainly not in the decision-making process,” Mulroney clarified. “I’ve been clear from the beginning—I’ve been clear since 1997—that I’m ready for a sequel. So, I’m on record.”

The cast has often thought about where their characters would be now. When the actors in the movie reunited in 2019 for Entertainment Weekly’s romantic comedy issue, Roberts said she envisions Jules working as a marriage counselor. “Those who can’t, teach,” she quipped.
