Pinterest is a popular tool that engaged couples often use to conceptualize and plan their nuptials—future spouses often flock to this image-sharing platform to seek inspiration for their floral arrangements, get ideas on their attire, peruse feasible DIY projects for their décor, and so much more. That’s why this online mood board has some of the best insights on breakout wedding trends that are expected to take off in the coming year.

As part of its annual global, insights-driven trends report, Pinterest Predicts—which involves months of compiling and evaluating users’ common searches—the company believes that one particular trend will dominate in 2024: groovy nuptials.

According to the trend report, weddings and pre-wedding events in 2024 will see a resurgence in ‘70s-inspired aesthetics. Pinterest’s Global Trends and Insights Lead Sydney Stanback explains that many people planning these celebratory events will incorporate decorations and designs that are reminiscent of this disco-loving decade. “Based on activity from people on Pinterest, we’re seeing all types of ways this trend is being incorporated into wedding plans, such as designing their invitations, encouraging guests to follow a ‘70s-themed dress code, ensuring their color palette is bold and vibrant, embracing a ’70s playlist or band, and adding the iconic disco ball as part of their décor,” Stanback shares. The result? A lively, fun atmosphere that contributes to a more distinct and memorable experience for guests.

What helps Pinterest make this claim is an analysis of recent searches from Generation X and millennials. After studying these terms, the online service found that there’s been a 170-percent increase for the keyword “groovy wedding.” Some other common wedding-related searches that the team has noticed are: “70s bride” and “retro wedding theme,” which saw a 50-percent and 80-percent increase, respectively. These searches also suggest that ‘70s-themed aesthetics will make an appearance at bachelorette parties. They’ve seen a 110-percent increase in “groovy bachelorette party outfit” and a 35-percent increase in “retro bachelorette party decor.”

Other trends that Pinterest expects to take off in 2024 are also focused on retro themes. Although they aren’t necessarily limited to weddings, there’s a good possibility that they’ll be showing up at couple’s nuptials in the upcoming months. For instance, the data suggests that Gen Z and millennials are finding new ways to incorporate the color blue—a ‘60s staple—into their makeup looks, whether it’s their eyeshadow or nail art. Another future trend that’s infused with nostalgia is jazz-inspired outfits and music and dimly-lit venues.

To compile this data, Pinterest looks at the increase in interest around certain terms that its users are searching, which they measure by percentage increase or the number of times people search for the term. After pulling this information, the team identifies patterns in the data. According to Stanback, 80 percent of the trends that the online image-sharing platform has predicated in the past four years have come to fruition. For instance, Pinterest forecasted that terracotta and rust color palettes would be a huge hit in 2023—and that’s exactly what we saw.
