King Charles III and Queen Camilla’s marriage was put to the test after the king of England was diagnosed with cancer on Monday, February 5, 2024. In the aftermath of his diagnosis, Camilla will live out her marriage vows, standing by his side and offering her love and support. According to The Independent, Camilla will play a pivotal role in helping Charles while he receives treatment. The PA news agency also reported that Camilla will continue all royal engagements and public duties following Charles’ health news. Charles, on the other hand, will postpone all of his.

After Charles received his diagnosis (but before the public knew), he and Camilla still carried out their normal routine. The two of them were spotted in Sandringham, England, accompanied by the Reverend Canon Dr. Paul Williams, as they made their way to Sunday service at the Church of St. Mary Magdalene on the royal Sandringham estate, Harper’s Bazaar reported. During the outing, Charles smiled and waved to the cameras.

Hours later, in a public statement, Buckingham Palace revealed that the monarch was diagnosed with a form of cancer while he underwent a procedure at London Clinic. “During the king’s recent hospital procedure for being prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted,” the palace said. “Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer.” The statement didn’t disclose the type of cancer that Charles has, but the palace did note that it isn't prostate cancer.

Charles left Sandringham earlier today to head back to London, where he will receive regular treatment as an outpatient. “The king is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure,” the palace said. “He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible.” Although Charles will not attend any public engagements for the time being, he will keep up with paperwork and other state business, per the statement.

Throughout their marriage, Camilla has reportedly been Charles’ main support system, so there’s no doubt that she will continue to be there for her husband as he copes with this diagnosis and undergoes treatment. As Camilla’s sister, Annabel Elliot, put it plainly in the BBC documentary Charles III: The Coronation Year: “She is his rock, and I can’t actually emphasize that enough. She is somebody who is completely loyal, and she isn’t somebody who has huge highs and lows.” One of Camilla’s friends Fiona also reiterated that statement, calling them an “extraordinary team.”
