CARATUNK — State and local emergency personnel were responding Friday to the report of an injured 14-year-old hiker on the Appalachian Trail.

Mark Latti, communication director for the Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife, confirmed shortly after 5 p.m. that the Warden Service, the Forest Service and local emergency personnel were responding to a point on the trail between Pierce Pond and the Kennebec River, which is west and north of Caratunk.

Unconfirmed emergency reports say the hiker had been unconscious for two hours, and weather conditions were stormy.

Shortly before 4:30 p.m. Friday, the National Weather Service in Gray issued a flash flood warning for Somerset County around Caratunk through 7:15 p.m. after Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain had developed in the area. At that time, between 1 1/2 inches to 2 inches of rain had fallen with additional heavy rain expected.
