AUGUSTA — Police warned residents of the Riverside Drive area to shelter in place Friday night as they searched for a man they described as armed and dangerous and suspected of threatening his parents with a firearm before fleeing. He remained at large Saturday morning.

Police are looking for Justin M. Larrabee, 40, of Augusta, who had not been located as of midmorning Saturday.

Larrabee is currently wanted on charges of domestic violence criminal threatening, obstructing the report of a crime, operating a motor vehicle while license is suspended, aggravated criminal mischief, violation of conditions of release, and two counts of domestic violence assault, according to a news release from Augusta police Chief Kevin Lully.

“He should be considered armed and dangerous, and the public should not approach him nor attempt to detain him,” Lully said in the release. “If you see him, call the police immediately.”

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call Augusta police at 626-2370, ext. 0.

The Maine State Police lifted the shelter-in-place order at midday Saturday, while urging the public to remain safe and vigilant.

“Larrabee has not been located at this point, and we are asking that the community continue to be safe and report any possible sightings of Larrabee to police,” Lully said in a news release issued at 7 a.m. Saturday. “The Augusta Police and Maine State Police continue to check on all leads being provided to us by the public. Larrabee has not made any threats to anyone else outside of those made to his family, however we still consider him dangerous.”

Lully said more information would be provided as it becomes available.

Larrabee allegedly displayed a firearm, made threats against his family, and fled a residence at 480 Riverside Drive, where Augusta police responded to a report of a domestic assault between Larrabee and his mother and father, at 1 p.m. Friday. He left the scene before police arrived. His car was located, but Lully said he remains at large.

Larrabee is currently facing unrelated charges of aggravated criminal mischief and criminal mischief for allegedly defacing the Maine Law Enforcement Officers Memorial on State Street in May of last year.

Police discovered the memorial, which lists 88 law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty, was defaced in the early hours of May 27, 2023.

After checking security video, Maine Capitol Police confirmed that a person had vandalized the curved granite memorial that stands not far from the Maine State House by spray painting on it at about 3:45 a.m. on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. Larrabee was arrested and charged in June, and indicted in October.

Larrabee is scheduled to have a dispositional conference at the Capital Judicial Center on those charges of aggravated criminal mischief and criminal mischief, Wednesday. During dispositional conferences lawyers for both sides of a case meet with a judge to explore potential resolutions to cases. Larrabee is represented by attorney Sanders Wommack, according to court documents.

Police shut down Riverside Drive between Route 3 and Stevens Road on Friday night, following an emergency alert to area residents to shelter in place. Riverside Drive reopened to motorists at 2 a.m. Saturday.

Shannon Moss, public information officer for the Maine Department of Public Safety, confirmed Friday night that the Maine State Police Tactical Team was responding to Riverside Drive.

Residents in the area reported on social media they were seeing a heavy law enforcement presence in the area and one poster reported a helicopter flying overhead.

Riverside Drive runs along the eastern bank of the Kennebec River and is also U.S. Route 201 and state Route 100.
