CINCINNATI (WXIX) - Three people are dead after a shooting took place near the University of Cincinnati on Monday, July 1, the Hamilton County Coroner’s Office confirmed.

According to Cincinnati Police Capt. Mark Burns, a total of five people were shot in the area of Highland and East University avenues. While the five people have not been identified, police said all of them are men.

The shooting happened at 2:50 a.m. Officers were patrolling the area when they heard multiple gunshots nearby, Capt. Burns explained.

A UC Alert notification went out to the community at 2:55 a.m.

“UC Emergency - Police responding to emergency reported on Highland/ E University. If safe, stay at your location. Be observant/take action as needed. More info soon,” the message said.

At 3:12 a.m., the emergency upgraded to a shooting.

When police arrived to the scene, they found four male victims, one of which was pronounced dead, he said.

Burns says the other three were transported to a nearby hospital, where a second victim was confirmed dead.

As of 8:24 a.m., the coroner’s sheet confirmed that a third victim had died.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with ALL who have been impacted by this tragic incident, this is simply heartbreaking,” Cincinnati police said.

A fifth man later showed up to a hospital “across town,” he added.

While at the scene, the captain says police saw someone running into a home with a firearm. That person eventually came out of the home voluntarily and was placed in police custody.

“They don’t know if he was the shooter or if he was hiding a weapon - we have no idea,” Burns told the media.

At 3:52 a.m., a third UC Alert was sent out.

“UC Emergency: ALL CLEAR Officers responded to Highland/ E University for a shooting. Suspect in custody and police will maintain heavy presence. Normal activities can resume,” it said.

Cincinnati Police’s Homicide Unit is investigating the shooting. Call Crime Stoppers at 513-352-3040 if you witnessed the shooting or have information.
