I loved painting, but I began to feel that there was also something rotten about it, something shallow and corrupt. I hated its aura of luxury consumption, the knowledge that whatever you did, however confrontational you tried to be, you were - if you were lucky - just making another chip or token for collectors to gamble with.
There are many ways to disappear. You can die, of course. That is the most literal. You can be marginalized or rendered invisible in some way, perhaps because you have no papers, or you’re incarcerated or have nowhere to live, no address. Or you can leave. You can make vanishing into a project.
