In 2017-2018, a diverse community of 57 colleges and universities embarked on a five-year journey – each funded by $1 million grants from HHMI – to build strong support systems to encourage student participation in science. Known as Inclusive Excellence 1 & 2 (IE 1&2), participants shifted from mindsets of “fixing students” to changing institutional policies, practices, and cultures. Grantees also developed projects to ensure students of all backgrounds would be able to succeed in science.
