A enthusiasm for helping others is a must for positions as a team manager and social worker, among other positions. Allow me to tell you about how I got started. When I was very little, I used to assist the elderly in any way that I could. One day, when we went to visit, I intended to go to an assisted living facility and purchase some items to present to the residents. After that, I realised I should pursue social work as well. One day, while I was at my grandparents' house, I noticed an elderly guy sitting on a street with hundreds of people going by, and no one was trying to assist. I'll keep it brief and simply say this: if you truly want to use your heart to help others, now is the time.

As a team, Social Workers often internalize challenges, primarily due to the level of expectations put before them. Unfortunately, the environment/culture (leadership) is not often supportive as they could be. Ultimately, SWs suffer with disparagement and burnout.

Feedback is a total package in management that ensures any breakdown is quickly addressed to enhance performance. Whether one-to-one or a meeting or even discreetly a social worker must embrace feedback.

Feedback or valuable insight should be presented as strategic, while also empathetic. The only way to achieve a common goal is to channel motivating interviewing skills to motivate change. But management must first enhance empathetic listening skills in order to address performance concerns.

In my understanding, a big issue with finding the cause of performance issues is: not being able to freely communicate between co-workers. We had a similar issue in our team. We decided to utilize team supervision sessions to delve deeper into these issues. During these sessions, we openly discussed challenges and brainstormed solutions together. It was like a safe space, and every emotion flowed in these sessions. To my surprise, people were really open to discussing things they normally would not say. Over the next few months, we monitored the impact of these solutions. The training helped improve confidence and skills, we adjusted workloads that I am sure prevented burnouts, and we increased a sense of community within the team.

It is important to collect info from feedback and use it to leverage any lapses in managing the identified problem. Working alongside your team ensures you have a decision that won't be biased and in fact it will increase team loyalty.

I have worked in Human Resources and Social Services for 15 years. I have been a social worker for 5 of them. The bottom line needs to be is supporting the growth and wellness at all levels. Ensure that everyone has appropriate time off & rest, learning and pay to meet their basic needs plus enough to save for what will best support their life. It is the tyranny of busy-ness and completing assessments (without mindful reflection on why we are doing them) that can render it meaningless, thus increasing burnout, poor care for clients and general poor practice. Clients do better when case workers are better. Case workers do better when their direct reports are doing better, and so on.

There is a clear explanation for a lack of job satisfaction and retention in this industry; the overall workplace culture often does not align with the well-being of the individuals. Growth shouldn't simply line pockets, it should also consider a purpose -driven culture. This means that it has a valuable and motivating purpose that prioritizes the well-being of employees, while simultaneously influences the organization's bottom line.
