You want to develop your leadership skills in coaching. What’s the best way to get started?

In my experience it starts with desire. While people may have come into leadership through a variety of means, if one wants to succeed, one needs to passionately want to do a great job of leading people. If the person has this, they can master all the rest. Because desire is linked to commitment and success.

If you are in a leadership role and have little to no training in coaching skill, the first step is to hire a coach. A good one. If you’ve never worked with an experienced and effective leadership/executive coach then you likely haven’t truly experienced the core value of that relationship. And it’s hard to place real value on something you haven’t been willing to invest in yourself. A coaching partnership with your team members can absolutely change the performance, engagement and overall culture of the team… But if coaching is treated as a ‘tactic’ mimicked by leaders who haven’t developed themselves through a coaching partnership it will fall flat and can even lead to poor performance and morale.

Before you jump into a plan..take some time to reflect on the why ? Why you ? Why now? Coaching is as much about you and your growth as it is about those who you coach… so back to the opening questions… why you ? Why now ?

To develop leadership skills in coaching, start by gaining a solid understanding of coaching fundamentals through books, workshops, or online courses. Reflect on your own strengths, weaknesses, and communication style for increased self-awareness. Explore various leadership models and consider formal education or certification programs. One thing I have found helpful is a proper leadership assessment to provide a third party objective view of your current strengths and weaknesses in order to determine the coaching agenda.

Sin duda aprender de los expertos es una vía de aprendizaje importante dentro del área del coaching, a la par que inspiradora. Workshops, libros, artículos y blogs también son muy útiles. Sin embargo, si no hay una base bien trabajada sobre cómo ejercer el liderazgo desde el coaching, es posible que el proceso sea largo y los resultados tarden en llegar. No one can learn swimming by reading about swimming or watching others swim. One has to get into the water and do it to learn it. so is with coaching. NO amount of reading or watching prepares you for what you need to do. While it is important to read about coaching and watch other great coaches to learn about what is working for them, it is important for you to go out there and start coaching. Take feedback from your coachees. Look at the results you are able to produce. Look at how willingly they are coming to you to be coached. All these self assessments and actual practice are the only things which will really help you to move up in your coaching practice.

Practicing is one of the best ways to improve your coaching skills, Some of the methods you can use to practice your coaching skills are: Coaching friend on a personal or professional goal. Joining a coaching community or network where you can exchange coaching sessions with other coaches. Seeking a coach for yourself who can model effective coaching and support your development. Participating in coaching simulations or role-plays with realistic scenarios and challenges. Recording or observing your coaching sessions and reflecting on what went well and what could be better. Asking your coachees for feedback on your coaching and how it helped them achieve their goals.

No solo practicar es importante, sino extraer de ella aquellos aprendizajes que nos permitan seguir evolucionando. Los coaches normalmente contamos con un supervisor al que acudimos de vez en cuando para consultar casos concretos y seguir aprendiendo. Ponerte en contacto con otras personas que tienen las mismas inquietudes que tú, puede ser también muy útil también para compartir experiencias, dificultades y herramientas, contando así con compañeros de viaje en los que te puedas apoyar.

Actually coaching is the only way to get better at coaching. Theory is fine but putting it into practice and refining your skills is how you get better. A way is to focus on practicing a particular coaching competency eg generating awareness in a few coaching sessions and then reflecting back on how well you did in demonstrating that competency in the sessions. Practice with another coach ie peer coaching and then asking for feedback afterwards is another way to identify areas of development to focus on.

Practicing your skills can't be replaced with any other activities. Find people to coach - formally and informally. Become a bouncing board for your colleagues and friends. Most of the professional coaching groups measure individual readiness by the number of hours they practice. Create more opportunities to test your skill and knowledge.

Feedback is the blood in the venes of any relationship, any team, any organization. There is never an absolute truth, only a perspective and by giving and inviting feedback you open a healthy flow that provides health all the organs. You may watch the blood pressure and monitor your bloodwork regularly.. meaning to edge out unskillfull toxic ways to communicate or check foundational enablement such as trust and psychological safety but that being ingrained, feedback is health🤗

It's important to have regular coaching supervision as a professional coach. It's a way to ensure that you're fit for purpose. It's a safe space where you can discuss the things that you might have found challenging in sessions. It's a way to gain support and restore yourself after challenging sessions and a place of learning.

It should be common knowledge that there is no development, no personal growth without feedback and support. Therefore seeking this does not only apply to leaders as coaches, its about personal development in general!

Best way for feedback and support is find and surround yourself with a group of friends that feel comfortable at giving honest feedback. And, you must allow honest feedback. Get thick skin and a backbone. A must to receive a true picture of yourself. All are broken and need some fixing.

Feedback ist absolut relevant für die eigenen Entwicklung. Wichtig ist hier nicht nur klassisch danach zu fragen, was hätte besser laufen können, sondern ebenso die positive Verstärkung zu nutzen, der Dinge, die schon gut gelaufen sind. Dabei ist es gerade im Coaching teils schwierig sich Feedback von den Klienten geben zu lassen, da die Wirksamkeit eines Coachings nicht immer gleich ersichtlich ist und auch nicht immer genau vorher gesagt werden kann, wann es überhaupt wirksam ist. Für die eigenen Reflexion ist es sehr gut, ein Tagebuch zu führen. Auch wenn wir der Meinung sind uns vieles merken zu können, so stimmt es nicht. Damit kann es eine sehr gute Grundlage für die eigene Entwicklung sein.

I would say the most effective way to get started is to see where in your life you’re already showing up as a person for your friends and family to get advice from. U.S. coaches are just turning a natural tendency into a career choice and cultivating our skill sets. Then, as you connect with groups that provide courses and services, learn as much as you can and take on being a leader within those organizations. I’ve found the best and fastest way for me to master practical is by taking on an accountability larger then myself that impacts others. That way, I’m pulled out of my comfort zone ongoingly. The best coaches love lives that are exemplary of their ability. To me, nothing else matters when it comes to authenticity!

As a Leadership Development Coach, I understand the importance of continuous learning and growth. Staying updated with the latest trends and best practices in coaching is crucial. It's also beneficial to explore new coaching methods and tools that align with your goals. Remember, every new approach you learn not only enhances your coaching skills but also adds value to your client's experiences.

A leader cannot but be, or become, a coach. Empowering your team, listening to your team, brainstorming and strategizing with your team is essential. You’re as good as your team members are. Communicate your vision, your strategy, your thoughts and listen, listen and listen to them. You get an insight when you listen. Behave as a leader and reach out. Live your values, share and be generous with your knowledge and expertise. Get creative and choose how and when, formally or informally, to coach your team. Make it an ongoing part of leadership not just to correct a behaviour when something goes wrong.

Active listening is an essential skill in coaching. Being fully present and attentive during conversations could create a safe and supportive space for others to express themselves.

The most critical skill in coaching is listening with curiosity. This means letting go of the need to solve and being curious about what makes this challenging for the person you're coaching. Listening is a tough skill to master in a fast-paced world. The higher you climb the corporate ladder, the less time you have for each conversation. How do you incorporate more listening under these circumstances? Consider that instead of going fast, listening allows you to go deep and inquire into the root cause of the challenges. The load you're feeling is often the result of issues not resolved in the past that keep biting away from your schedule. Committing to integrating more listening into every conversation will eventually save you time!

Et si la question des compétences était finalement pas la bonne, ou pas la seule en tous cas ? Dans mon expérience, les personnes en mesure de m’accompagner sur mon chemin, sont celles qui n’accompagnent pas depuis leurs blessures ou leurs croyances limitantes … Et si des techniques et compétences de coaching peuvent limiter l’impact de l’ego de l’accompagnant, son chemin personnel et spirituel, sa qualité d’être, son degré de conscience, son recul sur lui même et ses ombres sont au moins aussi important que ses compétences. Après, la vie est bien faite, les rencontres se font souvent assez naturellement… si on ne les force pas trop par des process ou du mental… l’accompagnant qu’on sent bien à un moment est souvent le bon :)
