First of all, you need to create awareness within your team about how to communicate non-arguably and non-violently. It is a mindset shift that needs to happen, from accusing, complaining and blaming to communicating facts and where individuals personally stand with these facts.

Help team members understand their communication styles (e.g., direct, indirect, analytical, intuitive, emotional) and those of their colleagues. Ask team members to reflect on how their style may impact others and how they can adapt to improve communication. Provide training on active listening skills like clarifying, and asking open-ended questions. Finally, acknowledge and celebrate improvements in communication, reinforcing positive behaviours.

I’d also introduce regular team-building activities to foster a sense of camaraderie and mutual respect. Additionally, providing training on effective communication techniques and conflict resolution can equip everyone with the skills to navigate differences more smoothly. By showing empathy and actively listening to each other, we can bridge the gap and ease the tension, ultimately building a more cohesive and productive team.

For example, if someone prefers detailed emails and another prefers quick chats, they switch their methods. Reflection and Debrief: At the end of the day, hold a debrief session where team members can share their experiences, challenges, and insights. This exercise helps build awareness of different communication styles and fosters a deeper understanding of how to work effectively with diverse approaches.
