Tracking results in fundraising is very essential, without proper documentation and tracking you might end up in the loop of doing the same set of routine over and over again without getting results. However, if you can effectively document and track your actions and fundraising activities, it will help you point the areas where you need to improve, fish out wasteful efforts and activities, identify opportunities you can explore and highlight pitfall that will ruin your efforts. Documentation and tracking you will enable properly planning and building for success.

An ambitious but doable personal goal for fundraisers is to bring in at least 2x your salary in new donations each year. It gives you a strong position to negotiate from when reviews/promotions roll around. To that end, tracking all fundraising successes is good but be sure to note *new* donors and upgrades separately - these two metrics really help prove your value.

Get to know potential donors. Get out. Know product knowledge. And work daily getting and revising the lack of good donor contact info. For example, high schools and universities do not work hard enough in securing better input on contact info.

I agree wholeheartedly on this one! Thinking outside the box is how you can set your agency apart from the pack. (Yes, there is a pack of other fundraising professionals hoping to engage the same donors you are.) Unique twists on your annual appeal, your signature event or a matching grant initiative stretches you creatively. The ability to be creative is how one sets a foundation for longterm fundraising success and is also an asset for good leaders to embrace.

Feedback is critical to success in anything we do. Whether its fundraising, managing others, or working with partners. Without feedback you actually will never know how effective or ineffective you might be. Ask for it, always thank others when you receive it (positive of negative), and provide it when appropriate.

One thing I have found helpful is feedback I see that it's not what you say but how you say it I feel that we should have freedom of 😑 expression I think 🤔 that 🚧 constructive criticism is an amazing idea 💡 I want to believe that talking with your peers gives you great ideas I intend to keep changing my life and ministry by changing my thinking 💭

Do not assume these are individuals from a particular age group, as philanthropy is a sector most recently being referred to as an "encore" career. Mentoring opportunities (on both sides: mentor and mentee) and being facilitated by several professional organizations, including the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP Global) and the National Charitable Gift Planners. Oftentimes these groups provide valuable networking and professional development opportunities locally and online.

Expertise in a.specific field is mostly about depth but seniority is about breadth. I would often take people into board level meetings, or give them a project to present at meetings, or take them to meetings out side fu standing or send them to meetings on an area of fundraising interest that another charity did really well. It’s simple, cheap and effective, and gives them things to put on their CV or to use at interview. Lift their thinking up and broaden it. As a fundraiser you’re part of a team, as a director you’re probably the only fundraiser on your senior team and as a CEO, you’re on your own. Technique only takes you so far.

Always keep in mind that fundraising should provide a good return on investment at all times. Donated advertising is highly prized, but campaigns implemented poorly run the risk of alienating donors. The same goes for volunteers who have to be closely supervised. Having to dedicate staff time to difficult volunteers defeats the purpose of enlisting “free” help. The same goes for making sure that volunteers do not have conflicts of interest with fundraising activities. I have had to fire volunteers on more than one occasion. Just because the labor is “free” does not mean it is risk-free.

Go out and ask people for money. If you don’t ask, you don’t get. Find out what they need, not what you, or your school, or your church, or NGO need. They don’t care if you need a new building, endowments, or operations money (especially not that). They care about what THEY NEED, a legacy, a tax write off, an ego boost, special treatment for their family. Learn their needs FIRST. Remember to ask for more than they might give; it inflates their ego and it’s anchoring. Stay simple. Don’t ingratiate. Don’t beg. If you can get money, you can name your promotion. Ask to be a VP. They can call you anything they want and it will boost your career.
