If you're in-between roles, one option to help you to continue to keep up your skills, and perhaps even build new ones, is to consult. By becoming a freelance consultant, you can take opportunities as they might arise, not only providing experience, but also funds to help keep you afloat until the full-time role you're looking for comes up. Or you might even find yourself becoming successful at freelance consultant and realize that you don't need a full-time role!

I'm always a huge proponent of team members having the training they need to get the job done. If they don't, then the failure is on me, not them.
