1 Know Your Goals

Before diving into the data, clearly define your business objectives. Understanding what you aim to achieve guides you in selecting relevant data sources. If your goal is to improve customer satisfaction, prioritize customer feedback and support interactions. For increasing sales, sales transaction data might be more pertinent. Aligning your analysis with specific goals ensures that you focus on data that can drive actionable insights and support your strategic decisions.

Data analysis can easily become a headless chicken exercise. To avoid this, you need a framework and that is defined by your goals. I recommend defining along the classic "Balanced Scorecard" dimensions: 1. Financials (Profit & Cash) 2. Customers (Tackle new/existing markets, maintain or upgrade customers) 3. Product/Processes (Enhancemen of internal processes, product improvements, new products) 4. Innovation/Learning (R&D, employees) Ideally those four dimensions tell a story so that goals in the "Innovation" dimension set the baseline for new "products/processes", which in turn help you reach your "customer" and "financial" goals. By that you have a leading <> lagging goal framework, which will define your way for data analysis.
