You're facing conflicts between volunteers during training. How can you effectively resolve them?

When conflicts arise, the first step is to acknowledge the issue directly and promptly. Ignoring the problem or hoping it will resolve itself can lead to festering resentment and a toxic team environment. Approach the situation with an open mind, and make it clear to those involved that their feelings and perspectives are valid. It's essential to create a safe space where volunteers can express their concerns without fear of judgment or retaliation. Remember, acknowledging the issue is not about taking sides but about validating the experience of your volunteers and setting the stage for resolution.

We are in it together. No one is an island. Together we are changing the world. We are building people and the organization will grow with it.

This is true to some extent, but if we keep the volunteer team engaged in discussions, they may not fully utilize their skills. I believe that while it's essential to address conflicts promptly, it's equally important to ensure each team member is given opportunities to contribute according to their abilities. Balancing conflict resolution with productive engagement will help maintain both harmony and efficiency within the team.

Listen to what the volunteers are saying. Most likely their passion is rooted in a previous experience they would prefer to never visit again. Parrot back what you heard. Ask clarifying questions. Do this for the second person who stands in opposition of the first person. Allow silence for a few seconds to weigh heavy in the room. Find the common points they share. Yes You may have to look deep. Once they both feel heard. Address the common points and leave the others alone. Remember, choosing sides is a no win situation. Creating a Win - Win can be challenging so step up to the challenge.

Don't entertain weaklings. There is often more valuable work to be done rather than nursing the feelings of adults who were improperly raised. Always operate from a position of accountability, what is your contribution to this mess ? And work from there

There's a popular saying that goes by; When you listen more, you learn more,and give out your best! As a leader, Active listening helps you process the views of both parties and equally affects the way you resolve their conflicts. You become more effective when you listen more.

Determine that the group will commit to "the one mic " norm. Each person will have a chance to refelct upon the given idenitified issue/owrry. There will be no interruptions nor questions until everyone has a chhance to speak for a specified allotted time

It's important to remain calm and neutral when dealing with conflicts. Avoid taking sides, showing favoritism or criticism

Neutrality is fine with mild issues. If the issues are lightweight then there is a quick Pro quote a juggling of both good and bad and moving forward without hurting or demeaning either personality. But if the issue is crucial if there is abuse, if there is disloyalty to the organization what both person need to be moved aside and other persons brought in.

It is essential to be a nonanxious presence amid conflict. You make sure both sides feel you are hearing them and that you are listening as well. There is a difference between hearing and listening. When doing training I always have the rules book nearby. That way if there is a policy call, quote the rules, and explain why these rules exist. And remind everyone if they go with their own unofficial rules and something goes wrong then the lawyers will not have your back.

Being a mediator in a conflict must always state an impartial position, in search of the best way to continue moving towards the established goal. Always referring to the objective you want to achieve can be an alternative that helps you resolve. If an impersonal position is referred to, referring to the objective sought, it can help the parties involved in the conflict to be more objective and determine if their positions contribute to that achievement. Otherwise, the advantages of each position must be defined and the dialogue directed towards a consensus process where everyone agrees and allows us to continue moving forward.

Be a history keeper, because it often repeats itself. A person will likely aggress in the way that they have done before, look for patterns and these won't disappoint

Anytime there is conflict between parties, I work on bringing people back to the goal- establishing why we are here. Giving each side a moment to reflect and share humanizes "the other side" and gives people a chance to consider their motivation. When we put our mission first, and share our motivations we are able to build empathy among a team and move through conflict.

It doesn't end in resolving issues among members ..... Continuous follow up and encouragements strengthen their decisions to live and work in peace. Play games and conduct picnics that foster collaborations, peace and connectivity.

Emphaty is a must trying to be in the shoes of everyone and make everyone validate and understand others point of view is indeed a good quality in a person and promote it during a resolution of a problem or conflict is even more important if the parties want to fix the problem.

what "I" feeling statements can be offered now that we have threshed out the issue through this process thus far what is coming through as to the general reflections?

Lead a discussion where every volunteer feels empowered to contribute, highlighting the importance of each person's input. This approach not only resolves the conflict but also reinforces a spirit of volunterism, unity and appreciation among your dedicated volunteers.

Sometimes volunteers jsut want to be a part of the bigger picture. Listen to their ideas, their concerns, and allow them to help make decisions on the work to be done. Not just show up and do as told. Many volunteers are very experienced and are use to being included in the process.

Sometimes it's just a matter of redirecting people to separate tasks so that they interact less. If you don't keep your volunteers happy, that spreads like wildfire. I have been a youth leader at a church mission trip environment -- taking two disgruntled volunteers and separating them caused those two to meet new people and see new solutions.

When a conflict arises, they usually focus on the negative or limiting elements of the positions that are faced, but giving it a constructive turn where both are considered complementary and that need to be polished to reach the optimal level of resolution, gives rise to become the basis of a positive experience that can be more enriching if it is not seen as a conflict, but rather as a complement in the search for the best alternatives to achieve the goal. They can even be an incentive for other contributions and facilitate the diversity of opinions in the wealth of the group participants.

After my deep contemplation on this question, I've come to the point to let them realize that they're volunteers and they have to be active and disciplined and after that we should give them a good solution one by one

One thing that is helpful is to have agreements for the group at the start of the training. This creates a framework for how conflict/challenges will be handled by the group. I like this as it creates a shared responsibility for the communities safety and effectiveness.

Working with a multi-dimensional team under any pressure to create has the potential for conflict. The good news is conflict is good for a successful team. A team comes together because of shared values. They politely work in a non-confrontational manner. There’s a limited commitment to the outcome. Once disagreements arise you can measure an increase in commitment. People have connected to the success of the project. Disagreements arise when members see the path differently. This stage is storming and once resolved members of the team develop a stronger bond to the outcomes and to each other. Progress accelerates and members are more open and willing to discuss issues. These four stages are called FORMING, NORMING, STORMING & PERFORMING

First it’s important to listen to all sides. Next take a breath so all can absorb the sides of conflict. After a few moments explain what is expected from the organization. Then get each side to give their thoughts now reviewed. Sometimes people need a place to vent then change can happen. If this doesn’t work explain what is really necessary and this must be tweaked. If need be talk to each person personally.

While most conflicts are sincere misunderstandings, or good faith differences of opinion, there's some small fraction that are neither. Such bad faith antagonisms may be unresolvable, even with the best mediation. If conflicts become a pattern, involve dishonesty or manipulative behavior, or create persistent disruption, recognize that you may have to make hard choices. The problem creator may even be charismatic and charming, but perhaps they have a tendency to single out someone to isolate and malign. There's a point past which tolerating such behavior encourages it, to where it can become the organizational culture. So if all efforts at resolution fail, start looking more deeply at what's happening.
