The principles of Quality has always been the same. The regulations always look at was is the risk benefit to quality of life for the patient and the product. It has nothing to do with cost. But unfortunately there is a cost to quality and more often than not companies do not invest it in early. This becomes a huge financial loss when regulators come in and identify quality and compliance issues. It costs 5 to 10 time s more to fix than to take the time and do it right the first time. Hence, the need to have a quality mind set starts at the beginning and should not be something as an afterthought.

Learn & reinforce the basics. The fundamental tenants and value of testing and quality haven't changed. Being able to effectively discuss risk, risk appetites and risk mitigation (including testing) remains key to defining effective and appropriate testing strategies. Quality is the golden thread in clinical trials from protocol development to data analysis and writing the Final Clinical Study Report. Quality is every member of the research team's responsibility. It is not up to the CRA or your internal Quality team to ensure Quality in the clinical trial. Although there are various technological advancements I believe this key indicator remains dependent on human input and a "manual" function. Attention to the smallest details are needed as a preventative measure as Quality is not effective when it is repetitively needing to be applied as a correvtive action. If that is the case, your Quality systems are lacking and need to be evaluated as a team to identify gaps and address the blind spots.

Consult and contract! We live in a time where fractional Quality is a real thing, especially for start ups and small organizations. And if the uncertainty of contracting isn’t your thing and you want to keep a full-time role, consider making space to ethically run a side hustle. It’s time consuming and not for everyone, but it’s a way to get involved with other processes and see diverse practices, products, and professionals. Side hustle or full-time gig, consulting broadens your experience and your network at the same time. When you are exposed to only one organization, you’ll only know their QMS, their practices, their way, for better or worse. Staying relevant means exposing yourself to many sources.
