When individuals feel heard and understood, they are more likely to engage actively, share their ideas openly, and contribute positively to the conversation or task at hand.

One of the best techniques to practice active listening is to repeat what the other person said in your own words. Sometimes, we only nod and smile, but that is not enough. However, when you repeat the problem or statement back to the other person helps both of you to build a better relationship and also understand the topic that is being discussed in the conversation.

Questions are your best friend to practice active listening. I use questions to shape whatever it is the other person is telling me. Who? How? Why? Where? You can almost create a movie in your head from what the other person is telling you and they will appreciate you wanting to understand what they are saying!

The best way to become an active listener is to remember always that you have two ears and one mouth. There is a clear reason for that.

Paraphrasing is important and asking specific tailored questions to further understand is also helpful. A really good book that has a lot of interesting ways to improve active listening, negotiating and overall communication skills is called Never Split the difference.

Meditation and mindfulness are powerful tools for canceling distractions by training the mind to focus and stay present. Once I started practicing meditation, I recognized a decrease in mind-wandering. As the mind becomes accustomed to staying focused during meditation sessions, this skill carries over to daily life, reducing the tendency to get easily distracted. I learned to acknowledge distractions without attaching judgment or emotional reactions, allowing me to refocus quickly. By practicing the mind to focus on the present moment, I developed the "mental muscle" needed to sustain attention and resist distractions.

Be fully concentrated in the meeting and try to clear from our mind other matters, not only professional but also personal matters. Turn off or mute our mobile phone or any other device we are using, to not receive alerts nor messages during the meeting. Try to avoid be distracted by other people talking or kindly ask them to be silent or speak lower.

Al iniciar la conversación es importante saber en que estado emocional te encuentras y de igual forma el estado emocional del otro. Definir el objetivo, duración y forma la conversación es importante. Si las condiciones ambientales no permiten que los dos se encuentren enfocados en la conversación es recomendable buscar un lugar que cumpla con las condiciones y no forzar la conversación.

Esta información es imprescindible saber la diferencia de lo que es oír y escuchar que mucha gente lo trata como si fuera un sinónimo. Oír es percibir el sonido. Escuchar es poner atención a aquello que se oye. Para escuchar hay que poner atención a la persona interlocutora observando tanto el lenguaje verbal como el no verbal.

Once you’ve learned that it’s in the best interest of everyone to ring fence the problem, you can eliminate potential problems that can cause further disruption. Make sure that you narrow the conversation down to the point where both parties can agree on what needs to be addressed in order to avoid further misunderstandings. Recap throughout the conversation to emphasize what’s important, how it’s understood and ask relevant questions for further clarity. Ask for input from the talker as to what he/she wants to achieve or do to improve or rectify the situation…. Questions can open the door for discussion and shed light on most challenges. This will lead to better insight and understanding where people can make sense of frustrations.

Finding common ground in a conversation can be a powerful and simple tool that can provide a neutral ground for conversation and help to build rapport.

Listen carefully to all opinions and how each people behave. If they are moderate or more radical about their thoughts. In that way we'll be able to know how to react or say about our own opinions. Try not to argue or enter into nonsense discussions that make people or us feel uncomfortable.

You can practice active listening with family members as well. Nod your head and smile to encourage the speaker, make noises like “uh huh, tell me more”. Summarise by saying something like, “So, if I’ve heard you correctly, you are saying…” Ask a relevant question that really demonstrates you have been paying close attention. Show you are listening through your body language too. Face the person squarely and do not fidget or fiddle with things.

Some people have this potential with no practice....you can start with your family or the people you live with till the people we work and share every day. Think thoroughly before talking and listen very carefully to everyone. This is important in each of our days in our life. From the moment we leave our home and cross with a neighbour till the moment with we are in a meeting of work, clients or potential clients. But all starts from home or us and how we talk and listen to our own thoughts.

What are you active listening for? If it’s to truly learn how to better serve then great. If it’s to find a mistake or information to use later, no great. If you actively listen people will share vulnerabilities, don’t use those against them later. Then you can active listen all you want, people will probably stop sharing.

Active listening is applicable in all parts of life, not just business. It's the ability to connect with a family member, get to know a new partner, and even diffuse a situation. It all comes from the ability to focus on the situation and remain 100% present. My favorite way to prime myself to be an active listener is to meditate. Even if it's just 10 minutes a day, I sit there and focus on my breathing. It's the same type of patience we need to be able to focus on someone else speaking to us.

Active listening does so much for you and for others including teams. Active listening gives confidence and momentum along with enthusiasm which can only add to a winning recipe. Many things can come into play such as difficult conversations, transitional moments, and more but active listening truly sets the table and is foundational for understanding, interaction, and collaboration.
