A new issue brief from the AAMC Research and Action Institute’s Fellow in Residence, Gaetano Forte, MS, Assistant Director, Center for Health Workforce Studies, University at Albany, SUNY, presents an approach to better understand the roles and contributions of nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician associates (PAs) on the health care team and how this new knowledge should be incorporated into existing workforce projections models. The paper proposes a two-pronged solution to modeling deficits and to better project supply and demand for NPs and PAs and asserts that models should adapt to how the workforce changes, including how it is composed, how it is deployed, and how it accomplishes its work. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gQZfjdc7
We know the supply of employed NPs and PAs has skyrocketed in the past decade, but what does this mean for #healthworkforce projections? Well, like so many things, it depends... A new paper published today (one of a series authored by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Research and Action Institute’s Fellow in Residence, Gaetano Forte, MS, Assistant Director, Center for Health Workforce Studies, University at Albany, SUNY), examines ways to better understand the role of NPs and PAs and how this new knowledge should be incorporated into existing health workforce projections models. To solve modeling deficits and to better project supply and demand for NPs and PAs, the brief suggests an approach that includes improving available data on the contributions of NPs and PAs in team settings and in independent settings; and reframing workforce practice and policy parameters to reflect reality of how care is delivered—not how we wish it to be. Understanding new information on the roles of varying care team members such as NPs and PAs can not only improve workforce projection models, but can also facilitate crucial policy conversations that acknowledge the current complexities of care provision and devise realistic policy solutions to health workforce shortages. So, it depends...do we want to have an honest conversation or continue to wish away our health workforce challenges? Read the full brief: https://ow.ly/og1W50SxWmK

“Your co-residents can be your greatest forever friends or merely your co-workers. Either way requires effort, but only the former helps you through the darkest days.” - Karen Cyndari, MD, chief resident and physician-scientist at the University of Iowa. Few aspects of medical education are as intense as residency. In the last week and coming days, freshly minted physicians across the country will tackle brand-new responsibilities, demanding schedules, and a raft of unfamiliar people and processes as they begin up to seven years of hands-on, supervised training in their chosen specialties. But residency also brings with it opportunities for extraordinary growth, tremendous achievement, and the development of profound relationships. Our AAMCNews team asked 17 successful physicians to share brief words of wisdom with today’s trainees: https://ow.ly/MNvA50SuLen We'd love to hear from you! Share your advice or words of encouragement for new residents in the comments below.
