Fierce Healthcare’s recap of AHIP’s 2024 conference calls out the importance of the movement to accountable care. For example, Katherine Hobbs, MD MPH, CEO of Author Health, emphasizes that integrating primary care is essential for achieving better outcomes for members with serious mental illness, substance use disorder, and dementia, alongside addressing their physical health needs. Hobbs states "If you’re actually going to move the needle in terms of total health and cost for these individuals, you have to be working not only on the behavioral health symptoms but also on their physical health needs as well." In June, A4H submitted feedback on the United States Senate Committee on Finance White Paper on Bolstering Chronic Care through Physician Payment: Current Challenges and Policy Options in Medicare Part B. In our response, A4H encourages Congress to extend the A-APM participation bonus, ensure that the incentive for participating in accountable care is stronger than the incentive for remaining in fee-for-service, and accelerate the transition to APMs.
