  • July is Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month–a time to focus on the unique strengths and challenges that Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) face when it comes to mental health. Bebe Moore Campbell was a journalist, teacher, author, and dedicated mental health advocate for the Black community and other underrepresented groups. National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month was established and named in honor of her work. Mental Health America has created its BIPOC Mental Health Toolkit to help BIPOC communities reduce mental health stigma, facilitate intergenerational conversations, and address mental health myths. #advantagebhs #mentalhealth

  • Our hearts are heavy today. One of our teammates was seriously hurt yesterday in a shocking incident at our homeless day service center. We're all hoping and praying for our colleague's recovery. This has shaken our entire team deeply. The individual who committed this act does not represent the community we serve and we remain committed to continuing to serve while ensuring the safety of our clients and staff. We're supporting each other and working closely with authorities to understand how this happened. We're taking immediate steps to enhance safety protocols, particularly regarding staff departures from our premises. Our thoughts are with our injured teammate and their family. Thank you to our community for your support during this difficult time. We'll share updates as we can. For now, please keep our colleague in your thoughts. #advantagebhs #teammates

  • Juneteenth: Celebrating Freedom On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas to announce that all enslaved people were finally free - over 2 years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. This day became known as Juneteenth, an annual commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States. While the Emancipation Proclamation came into effect on January 1, 1863, the news took time to spread, especially to more remote areas like Texas. Juneteenth marks the day the last enslaved African Americans in the Confederacy learned they were free. In 1980, Juneteenth became an official state holiday in Texas, with other states eventually following suit. In 2021, it was designated a federal holiday, providing national recognition of this pivotal moment in American history. On Juneteenth 2024, we honor the perseverance and resilience of enslaved Black Americans and recommit ourselves to building a society of true equality and justice for all. Whether through community events, educational activities, or personal reflection, we celebrate the hard-won freedom while acknowledging the work still ahead. Let freedom ring! 🎉 #advantagebhs #juneteenth
