Shortly before boarding his connecting flight at Charlotte Douglas Airport, Ken Jeffries had a cardiac episode. Claire Cerbie, a former Atrium Health Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute nurse was boarding the same flight when she noticed Ken exhibiting signs of a heart attack. Her quick thinking and immediate action, including performing CPR and using an AED, brought Ken back to a stable condition as they waited for additional medical support to arrive. Ken was then treated at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center by interventional cardiologist Dr. William Downey. "Most people who this happens to die,” Downey said. “This is sudden death. Claire's CPR kept him alive.” “A ‘thank you’ is not enough. I am so appreciative and indebted to you,” Ken said as he spoke to Claire over a zoom. Since receiving cardiac care from the team at Atrium Health Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute, Ken has been able to recover and is a strong advocate for CPR and AED availability and training. Ken’s heartfelt gratitude for Claire is a powerful reminder of the impact of quick action and CPR training. Read more about Ken’s story here: https://ietv.co/3S4QEUC

At Advocate Health, we are committed to transforming dementia care with compassion and innovation. We are proud to announce that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) selected our organization to participate in the Guiding an Improved Dementia Experience (GUIDE) Model, aimed to support advanced dementia patients and their caregivers in bridging the gaps associated with inequalities in dementia care. A multi-year clinical trial led by our academic core, Wake Forest University School of Medicine played an instrumental role for the creation of the GUIDE Model. Advocate Health and Wake Forest University School of Medicine's integrated approach to patient care underscores the importance of advancing research into innovative health care models that improve health inequities. Health care providers can only treat patients if we can reach them. At Advocate Health, we find ways to remove the barriers that patients sometimes run into when seeking care. That can mean expanding eligibility for financial assistance, connecting patients with resources that address unmet social needs, and even deploying mobile clinics that literally meet patients where they are. As our health system grows, we’re bringing more resources and expertise back home to the communities where our patients live. Find out more about how we’re bridging gaps in access to care and investing in programs that lead to more equitable and resilient communities: https://bit.ly/3LjftZg
