We all carry biases—unconscious beliefs or stereotypes that affect our understanding, actions, and decisions. In healthcare, these biases can subtly shape the interactions, clinical decisions, and quality of care provided to those we serve. By identifying and understanding our biases, we can become more attuned, compassionate, and culturally responsive caregivers. Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, MD, DPhil—a keynote speaker at AIDPH's 2020 Summer Colloquium—recently testified at a Senate Health, Education, Labor & Pensions (HELP) Committee Meeting on the medical debt crisis in the US. Like his 2020 keynote session on health policy disparities exposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, his moving testimony emphasized empathetic public policy reforms and promoting #medicareforall. Read his written testimony (https://loom.ly/GsTRQn0) for context on America's staggering medical debt, informative statistics, and potential debt relief solutions, including a program with Undue Medical Debt in Wayne County, Michigan, where he serves as Director and Health Officer at the Department of Health, Human & Veterans Services. #dentalcare

This session highlights the pivotal efforts within Texas to enhance Medicaid dental benefits for adults with disabilities by delving into the journey of building a broad stakeholder coalition. Attendees will learn the roles that traditional partners (advocacy groups, lobbyists, legislative allies) and non-traditional partners (community-led groups, trade associations) may play. This session will highlight how and why to center people with lived experience in advocacy work. Attendees will also learn about the successful model employed in Texas by the Coalition of Texans with Disabilities (CTD) and Texas Advocates to secure committed legislative champions. Discussion will draw from a toolkit developed by the American Institute of Dental Public Health (AIDPH) and CTD that provides stakeholders with frameworks, checklists, and real-world case studies to apply in their own advocacy work.

The article also references to the Dental Care Reform Act of 2024.
