When a global technology leader needed to move an unprecedented volume of high-value, fully populated server racks from multiple production facilities across the United States to a customer’s data center in a remote area of Washington state on a strict timeline, they turned to the dedicated technology logistics team at AIT for a solution. With a year-end deadline to install more than 2,300 units coming from multiple North American locations (and one in Europe) to the consignee’s data center, the project needed to kick off quickly and move at a fast pace. Additionally, beyond basic freight forwarding, AIT’s client wanted a solution that would provide their customer with coordinated ground transportation and white glove delivery services, including in-room server set up and debris removal. Populated server racks are not only high-value (about $400,000 apiece) and sensitive to light, humidity and tilt — they’re also extremely heavy, potentially weighing more than 1,000 pounds each. These critical freight characteristics require a logistics team with thorough product knowledge as well as stringent handling and installation procedures. After traveling to meet on-site with client representatives, AIT developed a tailored plan that would not only ensure the secure delivery and set up of more than 2,000 servers in three months, but also provide a scalable solution for future shipments of any size around the world. Due to the isolated nature of the client’s Washington distribution center, AIT also provided temporary warehousing and freight staging at our Seattle-area facility. That way, for two straight months, AIT enabled the on-time, white glove installation of 60 fully populated server racks a day, with zero delays. As a result of the seamless success and scalability of this project, the client named AIT’s technology logistics team as their exclusive partner for future server rack shipment projects in the state of Virginia (where they have more than a dozen data centers).
