Just celebrated 5 yrs with All Ways Caring HomeCare on July 8. I’m coming back from some time off and reflecting. Since I began, some things are better and some are the same. Some, like workforce challenges, may even be a little worse. However, I’m more optimistic than ever that Homecare is the answer to fill the healthcare gap for the largest aging population ever. Hospitals and facilities can’t cover the load and are cost prohibitive to execute even if they had the bandwidth. We must find increasingly creative ways to recruit and retain high quality caregivers. Caregiving should be recognized and treated as a high and noble profession. It is a calling and these roles should be coveted by job seekers and those providing the care should be revered. Almost all of us will either be a caregiver, need a caregiver, or both. Recreational therapy, as it is often called, refers to the use of recreation and other activities prescribed as treatment interventions provided by professionals who are trained and certified. Healing interventions within the realm of recreation might include adapted sports, expressive arts, family intervention, progressive muscle relaxation, horticulture, or a therapeutic outing designed for reintegration into a community.
