At the American Heart Association, we invest in the next generation dedicated to our mission. For Christen Lawrence, this path led from being an Intern of Impact to Community Impact Director in Alabama. Starting as a participant in the HBCU Scholars Program, Christen crossed paths with Lizzi Willicott, our Executive Director, who saw her potential and encouraged her to join the Intern Program. This opportunity honed Christen's skills and ignited her passion for #TheAHALife. She leveraged this experience to build genuine, impactful connections that paved the way for her full-time role. "What truly set me up for success was leading with purpose, passion, and always striving to go the extra mile." Stepping into her full-time career was a dream come true but didn’t come without challenges: Christen faced imposter syndrome, a common hurdle for many stepping into new roles. “If I had to be honest, I was my biggest challenge. I suffered from imposter syndrome as a young, black woman entering this field. Eventually, I realized that if I wasn’t qualified for the position then I wouldn’t have been blessed with the opportunity in the first place. My fears of being wrong or sounding illogical were holding me back from fulfilling the mission.” Christen's advice to others facing similar challenges is simple yet powerful: don’t let fear hold you back. At the Association, Christen recognized that everyone is seen, heard, and valued. If you’re looking for a workplace where you’re not just a number but a valued contributor, consider joining Christen and #TheAHALife at http://spr.ly/6048iZuHw ❤️

Shoeless Joe Jackson's widow, Katie, left part of her estate to fund heart disease research after the baseball legend died of a heart attack in 1951. The AHA also receives royalties from songwriters, authors and images of movie star Joan Crawford that help fund our mission. #AHABoldHearts

Strength (resistance) training should be part of your exercise routine, but not so you can have bulging biceps. Strengthening your muscles helps protect your body from injury, increases metabolism so you burn more calories, and helps you retain the ability to perform everyday activities as you age. #Exercise #StrengthTraining #ResistanceTraining

Type 2 diabetes raises your risk of kidney disease, but you can take steps to prevent it. Keep tabs on your blood glucose (blood sugar) and blood pressure and talk to your health care provider about an annual kidney screening. #KnowDiabetesByHeart
