CGT news from the University Hospital Erlangen in Erlangen, Germany. “Simply the fact that we have administered CAR-T cells for an autoimmune disease is something special, since it was previously only authorized for certain advanced types of cancer,” explains Tobias Krickau, Uresa’s pediatric rheumatologist at the Department of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine (director Prof. Dr. Joachim Wölfle) at Universitätsklinikum Erlangen. “We initiated the CAR-T cell therapy for Uresa as part of an extended access program for severely ill patients in accordance with the German Medicinal Products Act and the Ordinance on Medicinal Products for Compassionate Use as something known as an individual treatment attempt.” Read more about this case: links to the study in The Lancet and the article in comments below.
Breakthrough in Cell Therapy: Lupus Patient’s Amazing Recovery 👇 In June 2023, 15-year-old Uresa A. received CAR-T cell therapy at Universitätsklinikum Erlangen to treat her aggressive systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), making her the first child to undergo this treatment for an autoimmune disease. 👉 One year later, Uresa feels as good as before her diagnosis, with only minor colds. The therapy, typically used for certain cancers, had never been tried in children with autoimmune diseases. Kudos to both Ethan Brookes and Jason C. Foster for making me aware of this news. Fantastic milestone 👏 𝐈𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐨𝐢𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐩𝐢𝐯𝐨𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐲? #celltherapy #immunology #biotech #CGTweekly
