On May 31, blendVET partnered with the ASPCA   to bring a student Pathway program to the Children's Aid  in the Bronx, NY 🗽🩺. Over fifty 8th-grade students got to learn about veterinary medicine from the perspective of shelter medicine. Our goal was to show the students the various ways the ASPCA contributes to New York City. This includes community medicine, adoptions, behavior, forensic veterinary medicine, high-volume spay/neuter, and more. "I was a 12-year-old girl trying to find my way in vet medicine. There weren't opportunities like Believe and Belong in Veterinary Medicine for me. I want students to believe that they can belong in this profession. I am grateful to the ASPCA for supporting blendVET’s mission and for working together to increase access to veterinary medicine through education, exposure, and support.” – Niccole Bruno, DVM  . ✨ ASPCA Awards 18 Fund-a-Farmer Grants to Help Build a More Humane Farming System🌱🐄 Since 2017, the ASPCA has partnered with Food Animal Concerns Trust (FACT), an organization that works to ensure all food-producing animals are raised in a more humane and healthy manner. FACT’s Fund-a-Farmer grants award farmers who want to obtain or who already hold a meaningful animal welfare certification, as well as to farmers who are improving their animals’ access to pasture. FACT has awarded 695 grants, totaling over $1.3 MILLION to improve farm animal welfare, expand higher welfare farming practices and support work benefiting an estimated 1 million animals since 2012. This year, the ASPCA funded 18 of the grants, bringing our total supported farms through FACT to 128! These grants are vital for creating a more humane farming system, providing necessary resources like adequate fencing, food, water, and other higher welfare practices to ensure farm animals lead better lives. The ASPCA is dedicated to building more opportunities for farmers across the country so they can transition to higher-welfare systems, despite the financial challenges. 40 Pups Take a One-Way Flight to Find Loving Homes 🏠 With the help of MSPCA-Angell and New Hampshire SPCA, we relocated 40 dogs (30 puppies and 10 adults) from Alabama to Massachusetts in hopes they will find a loving family to call their own. This flight and animal transport, sponsored by Subaru of America is part of our Animal Relocation Program, which works with overcrowded shelters to relocate their animals to other shelters where the animals have more resources and a greater chance of being adopted. These collaborative transports are essential to the shelter system so more animals can be rescued. HAPPENING NOW ❗ New Mexico Emergency Response At the urgent request of the Santa Fe Animal Shelter and Helping Paws Across Borders, the ASPCA disaster response team evacuated 40 homeless dogs from local shelters to free up critical space and resources for animals displaced by wildfires and burn scar flooding in New Mexico. The shelter dogs were transported to an emergency facility operated by the ASPCA outside of the disaster zone and will receive ongoing care by ASPCA medical, behavior, and shelter professionals until they can be made available for adoption! 🎉FLORIDA VICTORY: PETS Act Signed Into Law! 🎉 The Providing Equity in Telehealth Services (“PETS”) Act will modernize Florida’s veterinary laws to give people more access to use telehealth technology for veterinary medicine. Florida pet owners can now connect with vets from their smartphones or computers, reducing the need for in-person visits in certain circumstances. We thank bill sponsors Sen. Bradley and Reps. 3,600+ California pets adopted in ONE DAY! June 1st was Cali's FIRST Adopt-A-Pet Day and we not only met our goal of 2,024 but nearly doubled it! This day-long event included more than 170 animal welfare organizations across the state who worked towards one goal - finding loving homes for homeless pets. We provided funds to cover the cost of the adoptions at participating shelters so that they were free to the public and now 3,609 pets are in homes! Of the 3,609 total pets adopted on CA Adopt-a-Pet Day, there were 1,977 cats, 1,541 dogs and 91 others, including rabbits, guinea pigs and other small animals. Nelly, a 3.5-year-old mastiff mix, had been in the care of Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter for 1.5 years after originally arriving at the shelter as a stray. Her adopter, Sahiba, traveled 40 minutes to meet Nelly and reports she has settled in to her new home. Whenever you choose adoption or fostering, you create space for more animals to be saved, creating a ripple effect known as #TheRescueEffect.
