Keeping Austin Healthy & Happy

About us

For nearly 75 years, the Greater Austin Y has evolved to address each of the community's greatest needs. From an expecting family searching for child care to seniors playing pickleball, the Y touches every phase of life and nutures happier, healthier people, a stronger community and a better world. We are elevating the quality of life in Greater Austin by boldly expanding access for all children, adults, families and seniors in our dynamically growing community. Why the Y matters in Greater Austin: * Parents lack affordable childcare * Children need to be safe near water * All kids need sports or play for physical, psychological and social benefits * Teens need engaging ways to build skills * Adults need fitness for overall wellness * Everyone deserves access to mental health care Founded in 1953 and anchored in three Central Texas counties, the Y is a $50+ million community enterprise that serves nearly 100,000 people annually through eight centers. We also operate 10 early learning centers and provide afterschool education and care at more than 75 licensed campuses in four school districts. Unlike any other organization in the region, the Austin Y has the unique ability to welcome, educate and elevate all, and is committed to creating innovative programs, places…and people. Greater Austin YMCA is a not-for-profit organization recognized as tax-exempt under Internal Revenue code section 501(c)(3).

Today we celebrate Father’s Day and recognize the impact fathers and male role models have on children’s lives. More than a 100 years ago, Sonora Louis Smart Dodd aspired to create a holiday to honor fathers. Dodd, the daughter of a single father and Civil War veteran, was inspired by a Mother’s Day service and wondered why there wasn’t a holiday for fathers. Her idea came to fruition with the first Father's Day celebration at the Spokane #YMCA on June 19, 1910. We are honored to be part of this history and to continue creating opportunities for fathers and children to bond through swim, sport, play and more! #fathersday #dads #austin #austintx

The Greater Austin YMCA named Reagan Nash, Senior Vice President of Wealth Management with Morgan Stanley Financial Services, as the next Chair of its Metropolitan Board of Directors during its 71st annual meeting, held last week at Huston-Tillotson University. Nash began his Y service over 15 years ago with the TownLake YMCA’s Community Advancement Board, where he helped lead the Y’s oldest and largest facility through a major renovation in 2012. As a member of the Y’s Metro Board, Nash played a key role on its COVID-19 Recovery Task Force in 2021, helping guide the nonprofit back to stability and growth. “The Y has been such a big part of my life and of this community for so long, it’s humbling to be chosen to serve in this role and help elevate quality of life across Greater Austin,” Nash said. “We learned during the pandemic that our community needs the Y to step up in new ways, and I’m excited to help lead that evolution.” Read more at https://lnkd.in/gZCywD7e #austintx #austin #nonprofitleadership

JE Dunn Construction has been a longstanding supporter of the Greater Austin YMCA, and especially YMCA Camp Moody. This Centennial Grant will help us fulfill the long-term vision for YMCA Camp Moody and enable us to deliver transformative camp experiences to kids. One in four kids at Y camp benefits from assistance provided by donors like JE Dunn. We are very grateful and extremely humbled by the generosity of all our supporters.

We're continuing our centennial giving campaign, “Building a Legacy: A Century of Generosity,” with the Greater Austin YMCA. JE Dunn employees selected the Greater Austin YMCA organization to receive a $100,000 grant, which will be used to build an airnasium at Camp Moody – a summer camp constructed by #JEDunn in 2020. For over a decade, our Austin office has partnered with the Greater Austin YMCA, and we are proud to support their mission of providing access to the community and helping people of all backgrounds improve their total well-being and quality of life. Be on the lookout for more surprise celebrations with our remaining Building a Legacy winners throughout the year! #InspiredPeople #JEDunnBuildingALegacy #JEDunnGivesBack #JEDunnCentennial

📣 On May 17th, the Travis County Commissioners Court unanimously voted to move affordable afterschool, summer programs and early childhood care toward the November ballot. 🗳️ This pivotal first step can shape the future of affordable childcare in Central Texas. We united with 40+ other childcare organizations on the importance of high-quality programs and their role in nurturing the next generation. Remembering Anamita Mukherjee We’d like to recognize and honor longtime volunteer Anamita Mukherjee, who passed away last week after a lengthy illness. Anamita served as Secretary on the Greater Austin YMCA Metro Board of Directors and Co-Chair of our Strategic Planning Task Force. In 2022 she received our Will W. Miller Volunteer Leadership Award, our highest volunteer distinction. Anamita carried herself with the utmost dignity and grace throughout her illness, while she continued raising her family, staying connected with her colleagues at University Federal Credit Union and volunteering her time with the YMCA.  As a resident of the Four Points area of Northwest Austin, Anamita helped guide our decision to invest in developing a new Y facility there. She helped shape the ambitious direction of our 2030 Vision strategic plan. From her leadership perspective at UFCU, she informed our approach to child care by helping us understand the challenges that working families and employers are facing. She also helped establish a new partnership between the Y and UFCU that is now providing valuable services to Y staff. Anamita’s vision and legacy will live on through all of us at the Greater Austin Y. We will carry her memory in our hearts and minds as we continue our efforts to elevate quality of life FOR ALL.

We are so grateful to be part of PNC Bank’s "Grow Up Great" program, which is a national bilingual initiative to support early childhood education. Yesterday their employee volunteer team made outdoor learning carts for all six of our #Austin area preschools and delivered them to our very excited kiddos!    Excited for more impact opportunities to come! #PNCGrowUpGreat #PowerYourCommunity #ForABetterUs #austintx #austintexas

One of the many things I love about my job is the incredible team I get to work with everyday. We show up for each other and our community. As we celebrate the 20th anniversary of #GrowUpGreat, PNC’s initiative to support early childhood education, the month of April or #GreatMonth as we called it, was filled with volunteer efforts across our great city and region. Yesterday we had our Outdoor Build volunteer event where the team made outdoor learning carts for early childhood outdoor learning centers (we partnered with and delivered them to local Greater Austin YMCAs) across our region. As you can see, we showed up for each other and our city.
