I teach clinicians about nutrition and connect dietitians with providers. Host of Exam Room Nutrition Podcast - where busy clinicians learn about nutrition
A beloved childhood memory --> Ham and cheese sandwiches!🥪 I ate one everyday for lunch. What's your favorite sandwich??? 👇 But, now that I'm a mom and we live in a culture where literally ANY food is labeled as "toxic" .... is it time we ditch the deli meat? I unpacked this topic for Contemporary Pediatrics in this months Pediatric Nutrition Notes segment. Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/egDeiE8k Here's what you need to know: - Deli meat falls under the umbrella of processed meats, which are classified as a Group 1 carcinogen. Meaning there's strong evidence they cause cancer. But, hold on, don't panic yet! -Deli meats are grouped with other processed meats like bacon, sausage, and spam, which makes it challenging to pinpoint whether the increased cancer risk is due to the inherent qualities of all processed meats, or specific types within the category. - Processed meats are also high in sodium and saturated fat. So know your patient and their risk factors before giving a recommendation. I've got some good news though! A recent study uncovered a potential silver lining in the processed meat debate: consuming specific foods alongside processed meat might reduce the associated cancer risk. Check out the article to learn more! (I'll link to it in the comments)

Here are 5 questions you should consider when evaluating a patient that could have a significant impact on their food choices and weight. (this is from my debut article in Contemporary Pediatrics). 1. Have there been any changes to the family dynamic like a death, move, divorce or new baby? 2. Is the family having trouble accessing or affording food? 3. Is the child struggling emotionally in some new way? 4. Does the child have any feeding difficulties or physical abnormalities that impact her appetite? 5. Are there any concerns about eating behaviors, such as excessive snacking, skipping meals or secretive eating? Do you think discussing a child's weight in front of them is harmful or helpful? ---- 📜 Get FREE full access to the article through the link in comments.
