Last Friday, Deutsches Altenheim celebrated its 13th Annual Veterans Day Program at the West Roxbury campus with moving tributes to the community's veterans. Over 30 residents on the Deutsches Altenheim campus are veterans. Keynote speakers included Boston Mayor Michelle Wu and former Mayor Marty Walsh. The day's events began with an introduction from Deutsches Altenheim CEO Babacar Diop, followed by "The Pledge of Allegiance" led by Campus Music Therapist Sara Slusarski. "The National Anthem" was performed by The Latonics, a cappella group with students from The Roxbury Latin School, followed by an invocation from Reverend Louis Bier, Chaplin, VA Hospital West Roxbury. VFW Post 2902 concluded the event with the "Honor Guard Salute" and Sara Slusarski performing "God Bless America". The Deutsches Altenheim "Wall of Honor", a pictorial exhibit of members of the Deutsches Altenheim community who served in the US Armed Forces, was on display throughout the day. Edelweiss Village, the assisted living community nestled within the Deutsches Altenheim campus, has begun renovations to convert a portion of its 62-unit residence into certified memory care apartments, common areas, and secure outdoor spaces.
