In the digital world, a certificate is kind of like a passport. It verifies the identity of a website, organization, or individual, helping people move about safely online. And like a passport, a digital certificate is only as trustworthy as the authority that issues it. In early 2024, Entrust failed to revoke more than 26,000 mis-issued EV certificates within the CA/B Forum’s Baseline Requirements revocation timeline. By late June, Google’s Chrome Security Team cited “a pattern of concerning behaviors by Entrust” in its announcement that Chrome would no longer trust Entrust-issued TLS certificates after October 31, 2024. This announcement has the potential to cause significant and widespread disruption to any organization using Entrust certificates. On July 11, join DigiCert experts who helped thousands of customers tackle a similar situation when Symantec certificates were distrusted. Google has announced that Chrome will no longer trust TLS certificates issued by Entrust, effective October 31, 2024. If you are impacted by this, we understand the potential disruption it can bring to your business and are here to help. Major internet browsers (Google Chrome, Apple Safari, Microsoft Edge, and Mozilla Firefox) individually maintain lists of root Certificate Authorities (CAs) they trust. To be trusted by a browser, CAs must comply with stringent CA/Browser (CAB) Forum requirements. Because customers need a single certificate that works everywhere, CAs need to maintain trust of all the major browsers. If a digital certificate issued by a CA doesn’t work in even one of the major browsers, the certificate is of little value. Browser root programs receive regular audit reports about CA operations and compliance with the CAB Forum requirements. Browsers also closely monitor how CAs handle incidents when they fail to meet requirements. Browsers expect CAs to be transparent about what went wrong, and work in good faith to fix issues to prevent re-occurrence. Recently, browser root programs indicated that they had begun to lose confidence in Entrust’s TLS certificate issuance practices. Google “highlighted a pattern of concerning behaviors by Entrust” ultimately leading to their decision to remove Entrust roots from Chrome, which has 65% of the browser market share. Google recommends “affected website operators transition to a new publicly-trusted CA owner as soon as reasonably possible” to avoid adverse impact. See https://lnkd.in/gH5KkNiV Navigating CAB Forum rules can be challenging, and DigiCert has occasionally had incidents as well. We take our responsibility as a trusted CA very seriously. First, we work very closely and collaboratively with browsers. We are transparent when there are issues. Sometimes this requires difficult conversations with customers whose certificates may need to be revoked because of compliance issues. Browsers trust us to implement improvements to prevent them from happening. Second, we make significant contributions to industry standards and open-source software to make the internet and Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) better. Our public Certificate Transparency (CT) log infrastructure and open source pkilint software are used by the community to detect issues and demonstrates DigiCert’s deep and enduring commitment to compliance and technical correctness of all issued certificates. Finally, we provide automation through DigiCert Trust Lifecycle Manager and ACME. Our CA-agnostic, modern PKI platform discovers and manages both public and private trust environments to avoid disruption from revoked or expired certificates. Customers love DigiCert and our Net Promoter Score (NPS) is 80. If you need assistance migrating your TLS certificates from Entrust, we are here to help. The most forward-thinking companies are working hard to figure out how to leverage the incredible processing power of quantum computing once it's available. However, it will also bring a range of threats. Quantum computing is likely to rely heavily on the cloud, making it more accessible to users—and attackers. At the end of the day, securing cloud quantum computing will require similar practices to securing other technologies and data in the cloud:  ☁ Strong authentication ☁ Visibility and scale ☁ Simplified certificate management Learn more about protecting your organization’s legacy cryptography from the malicious use of cloud quantum computing resources, preparing for quantum with PKI modernization, and achieving crypto-agility in our latest article. #quantumcomputing #cloudsecurity #PKI #cryptoagility #quantumthreat
