About us
The U.S. Department of State is focused on accomplishing America's mission of diplomacy at home and around the world. The U.S. Department of State manages America’s relationships with foreign governments, international organizations, and the people of other countries. U.S. diplomats and Civil Service professionals carry out the President’s foreign policy and help build a more free, prosperous, and secure world. U.S. Department of State employees, with their skills, character and commitment to public service, are the backbone of America's diplomacy. They represent the people and advocate the interests of the U.S. to the rest of the world. The Foreign Service (FS) is dedicated to representing America and responding to the needs of American citizens in other countries. Members of the Foreign Service can be sent to any embassy, consulate, or other diplomatic mission anywhere in the world, at any time, to serve the diplomatic needs of the United States. Civil Service (CS) employees provide in-depth expertise and continuity in accomplishing all aspects of the Department's mission and are involved in virtually every function of the Department. Civil Service employees issue passports, compile and analyze overseas reports, provide logistical support to posts, consult with Congress about foreign policy initiatives and policies, and formulate and manage the budget. Nearly 7,400 Civil Service (CS) employees serve as a stable resource pool in Washington D.C., at Passport Agencies and field offices throughout the United States, and at several Consulates in Mexico. More than 31,000 Foreign Service National (FSN) employees also supplement the personnel requirements of the Department overseas. FSN employees are local residents of the countries in which we maintain diplomatic posts and consulates. They are valued members of our embassy teams, for they provide continuity for the transient American staff and have language and cultural expertise.

International moves every few years are both a rewarding and challenging aspect of the Foreign Service career. Check out what @Diplomat in Residence Allegheny Sherry Sikes shares about how her years as a diplomat in different countries has expanded her community and grown her circle of friends across the world!
Those of us serving our country overseas carry our households with us, from spouses and children, to pets. Yet, we leave behind our extended family, friends, and communities. The good news? We forge new friendships and find meaningful communities along the way! In Southern Africa, I made lifelong friends and together we cherished exploring the local wildlife. At every post including Lagos, Addis Ababa, and Maputo I forged new friendships that has resulted in an ever-widening circle of sisterhood. From evacuating Americans during the COVID pandemic in Durban to volunteering at youth centers or joining local Rotary clubs, these experiences have shaped my State Department journey and greatly enriched my life. #chosenfamily #doscareers #careersatstate #globalcareers #ForeignService #overseascareers

One of the most visible roles of the State Department is issuing passports, and in the past few years we’ve issued more passports than ever before. How many? Well, let’s just say that in 1990, only 5% of Americans had a passport. Today, that number is 48%. To meet demand, we recently announced plans to add six new passport agencies to speed up the process and let you get on your way. The offices will be in: •Salt Lake City, Utah •Kansas City, Missouri •Orlando, Florida •Charlotte, North Carolina •San Antonio, Texas and •Cincinnati, Ohio. Whether you are renewing or applying for your first passport, apply early. Average wait times can be found on travel.state.gov/passports. And if you already have a passport, make sure to check the expiration date well before your trip. Some destinations require you to have several months of validity on your passport to travel. If you are interested in joining our passport team, we’d love to hear from you. Make sure to follow our careers page and travel.state.gov. https://careers.state.gov/ https://lnkd.in/eZdfiYz
