About us
The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) is an operating administration of the U.S. Department of Transportation and was created by the Department of Transportation Act of 1966 (49 U.S.C. 103, Section 3(e)(1)). The purpose of FRA is to: promulgate and enforce rail safety regulations; administer railroad assistance programs; conduct research and development in support of improved railroad safety and national rail transportation policy; provide for the rehabilitation of Northeast Corridor rail passenger service; and consolidate government support of rail transportation activities. Today, the FRA is one of ten agencies within the U.S. Department of Transportation concerned with intermodal transportation. It operates through seven divisions under the offices of the Administrator and Deputy Administrator.

FRA Administrator Amit Bose was proud to join state and local leaders and the Quonset Development Corporation for a ribbon cutting to celebrate three new upgrades to rail infrastructure in Quonset Business Park. A new engine house and railyard will provide facilities for Seaview Railroad, Quonset’s rail operator, to repair and store railcars, while a new connector line will reduce transit times among the 239 companies within the Quonset Business Park. Freight rail projects like this also keep thousands of trucks off the road, helping lower emissions and make transportation more sustainable. FRA supported the project with a $4 million Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements (CRISI) Program grant, a crucial source of funding for many shortline railroad projects. Thanks to President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, federal investments in the CRISI program are higher than ever before, and we are advancing even more rail projects that increase safety, strengthen supply chains, and more while benefitting the economy and everyday life.

Thanks to funding under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, FRA was on site last month for the groundbreaking of one of Amtrak’s newest stations in Brattleboro, Vermont. This American with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant station will have both interior and exterior accessible waiting areas, along with other modernization and accessible improvements inside, on the platform, and in the parking lot. Additional ADA upgrades include a raised platform eliminating the needs for steps to get on or off a train and accessible restrooms. FRA Office of Civil Rights Equal Opportunity Specialists Ed Pritchard MBA, USAF (Ret) and Kelli Lynch, PhD, LMSW serve as the main points of contact on the development, direction, and implementation of internal and external policies, programs, standards in programs operated by recipients of FRA funding.

The Confidential Close Call Reporting System (C3RS) is a confidential, voluntary, FRA-sponsored program that provides a safe environment for rail workers to report safety concerns. Our agency continues to grow this vital safety program with Norfolk Southern and crew members represented by the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET) and the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers – Transportation Division (SMART-TD) joining this year as well as BNSF Railway and its train dispatchers, represented by the American Train Dispatchers Association (ATDA). https://lnkd.in/g8QkEPgK
