#HurricaneBeryl started an exceptionally early hurricane season, slamming through the Caribbean at the beginning of July. This was the earliest Category 5 hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic. ⚠️ Damage is particularly significant in #Jamaica and #Grenada. FMSC partners in the region are on the ground responding to the needs of those affected by the storm, many using MannaPack® meals to support their disaster response work. Gladis lives in #Zambia. She does not have the strength to work outside her home and, as an elderly widow, the only family she can rely on is her daughter — a single mother. Resources are tight. While her daughter works as a maid to make ends meet, Gladis takes care of her two grandchildren.   When Gladis received MannaPack® meals from FMSC food partner World Help, she said, “This is a big blessing to us. Millions of children go to bed hungry every night. But Mary’s children don’t — not anymore. After her sister died, Mary* adopted all four orphaned children. With the five children she already had, Mary is raising nine children on one income. Mary and her family live in Kenya, where one of every four children under five have stunted growth from undernutrition. She works hard but struggles to pay school fees and rent while also putting food on the table. Some nights, the whole family went to bed hungry. When Mary began to receive MannaPack meals through FMSC partner Care for AIDS, she was overjoyed. “The MannaPack [meals] mean so much to my children and I! Now my children sleep with a full stomach.” Now that Mary can provide MannaPack meals for her children, she’s able to use the money she earns to pay her bills — she’s even saving up to start a business so she can break the cycle of poverty for her family. Would you be willing to eat ONE bowl of rice as your only meal for ONE day to support a child facing food insecurity? A staff member of ours, Stacey, accepted this #ONEforONEchallenge from our partner ORPHANetwork. Here are her thoughts on the exercise: "It felt fitting to use my Guatemalan Hope bowl from FMSC MarketPlace for this challenge. One of my favorite quotes is from an Emily Dickinson poem:   'Hope is the thing with feathers That perches in the soul And sings the tune without the words And never stops – at all.'   In my mind I’ve usually thought of hope as being like this quote describes — intangible. A very real thing ... but not something you could actually touch or see. What I realized as I waited for my MannaPack® meal to cook on my stove tonight was this: hope can be smelled, touched, tasted.
