📣Appropriations Update 📣 We want to thank everyone who took action this week to protect funding for @AmeriCorps & @AmeriCorpsNCCC, and the vital resources they provide community-based organizations all over the country. This week, the House Appropriations Committee approved a bill that would jeopardize more than 71,000 AmeriCorps positions, risking the loss of vital resources for community-based organizations all over the country in 2026. Did you know that all students in New Mexico now have access to free and healthy school lunches?✨🌱 At the inaugural Youth for Food Day this past February, over 150 FoodCorps students, parents, staff, and alumni gathered at the New Mexico state capitol to celebrate the impact of Senate Bill 4, passed unanimously last year, which grants all students in the state free access to school meals. School food is a matter of justice. Food justice is key in building a world free from oppression. And schools—among the earliest places where kids learn about food, practice building community, and often get most of their daily nutrition—are critical in shaping this world for our kids. Today is the last day of service for our 2023-2024 FoodCorps AmeriCorps members! 🥹 In the words of Cassidy Hobler, FoodCorps Arkansas program coordinator: “We are so proud of you! You are community builders! You are courageous teachers, fun-makers, and friends. You are passionate about making children feel seen, loved, nourished, and included. You are confident and adaptable people who stretch, leap, and try new things… Thank you AGAIN for your commitment to the schools we serve, for being open to growing and learning, for stocking pantries over and over, for being resourceful and creative on the fly, for challenging yourself and for challenging what’s “possible”, for dreaming big and taking people with you, for gardening your hearts out, for being a trusting loving adult that kids look up to. Thank you for supporting each other and lifting each other up! Did you see FoodCorps co-founder Curt Ellis and his 2007 documentary "King Corn" on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver? 🌽 Curt started his food justice journey by learning all about this common crop and co-created the 2007 documentary “King Corn,” which looks at the impact of America’s corn farming industry on our food system. “King Corn” won a Peabody Award for showing how the #FarmBill shapes the way we eat.
