At last count, there were 8.5 million job openings in the US and only 6.5 million unemployed people. This 2-million-person gap presents a bit of a quandary for hiring managers, and it’s worse in some industries than others. The construction industry is faring particularly badly, and a recent report from the Associated Builders and Contractors trade association claims that we’ll need over a half million workers in that field alone in this calendar year. But even for information workers and professionals in other fields, hiring is a problem. To harness an advantage in hiring in this market requires partnering with outside resources. When hiring for higher-level jobs, a recruiter like those of us at Gables Search Group puts you at a distinct advantage. But for entry-level jobs, sometimes, you have to great creative — looking to local high schools, community colleges, trade schools, and workforce development organizations.

Summertime is vacation time. So why aren’t your employees taking PTO? 80% of employees don’t take full advantage of their allotted paid time off. Maybe it’s because they’re actually “quiet vacationing” — the term for remote employees taking “hush trips” without actually claiming vacation days. They’re answering the phone and staying on top of email, but they’re doing it from Bora Bora or a campsite in a National Park. “Michael, what are they trying to get away with?” According to one Resume Builder survey, a lot of them are just too nervous to actually take time off. And Tiffany Slater, founder of St. Louis-based virtual HR services company HR TailorMade (in Inc.), says, "Leaders rarely take vacation. They work very long hours. So they're not demonstrating to their team members that taking time off is actually of value." Company culture starts at the top. If you’re in charge, the best thing you can do for your employees this summer is… take vacation!

As we get further from the pandemic, one might think that gender disparities plaguing professional women would be lessening. Yet, in polls, they’re just getting worse and worse. - Women are complaining about financial security more than they did a year ago. - They’re more worried about women’s rights. - They see a decline in their own mental and physical health. - They worry more than ever about their own personal safety coming to and from work. - They even worry more about job security than they did in 2023. What gives? At the end of the day, the pandemic brought to light huge inequities in our society’s support for working mothers — especially when it comes to things like flexible work hours and childcare support. Yet, many of those things have not changed. As we’ve gotten back to normal, women have seemingly returned to the stressors that have always plagued their careers (sexual harassment, anyone?) and seem to only be getting worse. As a recruiter for 28+ years, I’m always on the lookout for better opportunities for women at companies truly dedicated to supporting their well-rounded workforces.

The hiring reports have been very strong of late. In May, 272K jobs were added to the market. The bulk of these jobs, however, are in healthcare, leisure and hospitality, and the government sector. For private sector information workers, things are not entirely as rosy, and the danger in reading these reports is that they paint a very broad-strokes picture of the employment landscape. As a recruiter at Gables Search Group working with hiring managers and job seekers every day, I get a more detailed vantage point. The number of available jobs may wax and wane, but within your specific area of expertise, there is a job out there for you. According to the Feds, wages are also going strong, by the way. Average hourly earnings rose 4.1% over the past year (a stronger increase than expected). If you’re looking for new role, reach out today.
