You don’t just have hard costs when you lose an employee, you incur soft costs as well. ❌ Lost knowledge ❌ Lower productivity ❌ Drop in employee morale ❌ Change in company culture  ❌ Time it takes to onboard and train someone new These are all challenges and hidden costs you face when you can’t retain your people. Losing employees has a more negative impact than you may think. It’s hard enough to hire people that meet your requirements - do everything you can to keep them happy once they're on your team. #groundupconstructionrecruiting

  • The language we use can make all the difference. Good business owners understand that words are powerful tools that can inspire, motivate, and build trust among their teams. Using clear, respectful, and encouraging language helps create a positive work environment. For example: 💭 "Great job on that project, __. Your hard work is really appreciated." 💭 "Let's discuss how we can tackle this challenge together." 💭 "I value your input and would love to hear your ideas." When people feel heard and valued, they are more likely to respect and trust their leaders. This mutual respect leads to stronger collaboration, higher morale, and ultimately, better project outcomes. It's not just about what we build, but how we build it—this starts with the words we choose every day. #construction #leadership #groundupconstructionrecruiting

Don’t pay someone the minimum amount and hope they stay around. Unfortunately, I see this all the time in construction. If someone on your team is a top performer, pay them what they deserve. Just because you have a standard amount you pay for a certain position, doesn't mean you can't break those rules you put in place. Great employees 10X their salary. If you don’t give people what they're worth, you risk losing them to someone who will. #groundupconstructionrecruiting

  • Cultivating a company culture where employees (and you!) can spend quality time with family or be home for the moments that matter is crucial. Balancing the demands of our work with that of personal life is not just about time off—it's about creating an environment where everyone can thrive both at work and at home. One thing we personally look forward to at the end of a busy week is sharing a meal together, either by cooking at home or supporting a local restaurant. In a society that often celebrates endless hours of work, we choose a different path. We believe in finding time to enjoy the fruits of our labor, embracing quality time together, and recognizing that taking a break is something we've earned. #groundupconstructionrecruiting #construction #worklifebalance

THE GOLDEN RULE IN CONSTRUCTION There is one golden rule I've learned in the construction world and in life over the years: no matter how much you think you have everything planned out, 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗲𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘀. In my eyes, God is always preparing us for something, whether we know it or not. Life is a journey, and along the way, you'll face countless decisions that can benefit you, sometimes for your efficiency, and sometimes for others. In the 48 years I’ve been blessed to walk the earth, I've learned that whatever you think you have all figured out isn't going to stay that way. You must lean into problems, embrace the uncertainty, and understand that you can't plan everything. I didn’t set out with a passion for construction finance and commercial subcontractors, it found me. My love for business and finance came from a different place, inspired by watching my dad run a commercial construction business. He was a contractor all my life, starting as a laborer and creating a management position for himself. Even when the company he worked for went under, he started a new one with his partner. They ran that business successfully for 20 years until they sold it and retired. I worked on those construction sites, and knew the ins and outs, but the financial side was a mystery. Yet, my passion for construction and business remained strong. When the opportunity arose to dive into construction finance, it wasn't because my dad's background qualified me, but because I 𝗖𝗢𝗨𝗟𝗗 𝗥𝗘𝗟𝗔𝗧𝗘. My 20 years of business experience, including timeshare sales, equipped me with invaluable skills. Timeshare sales, though often viewed negatively, gave me countless reps in communicating effectively, understanding diverse problems, and learning to listen deeply to other people. These were not lessons I set out to learn, but looking back, they were crucial. In timeshare, I didn't aim to be a great communicator, but presenting to different people weekly, I honed my ability to listen, understand, and relate. I learned something new from every interaction, from vacation preferences to business insights. These skills translated into every role I've taken on, from sales to leadership, and are essential for any entrepreneur. So, what's the takeaway? 𝗘𝗺𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂'𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝘁, 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆 𝗲𝗹𝘀𝗲𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲. Every stage of life offers lessons that can transform us if we let it. It's about recognizing that each experience, no matter how unrelated, prepares you for the next step. The skills you develop today, no matter how mundane, will be invaluable tomorrow. Whether passionate about your role or just going through the motions, remember - every experience is a stepping stone. Embrace the journey, #trust you're being prepared for something great, and remember you #learn and prepare by giving your 100%!

Khadijah and I have been praying a lot lately that God will bring the right partners to our company. A few months ago we started working with a general contractor that primarily builds churches. We helped them hire an Estimator and are now recruiting for an Architectural Drafter position. Last week we met with a general contractor that's wanting to build a Christian culture within their company. We're in talks with them to help hire a Project Manager and then potentially a Superintendent and Director of Operations down the road. Yesterday we met with a Christian owner of a metal stud framing/drywall company who's a leader within our community and is trying to double the size of his company. We're going to be helping him hire an Estimator, Controller, and Lead Designer over the next several months. If you can't tell, God is actively at work answering our prayers 🙏 #groundupconstructionrecruiting #godisgood
