A developmental risk management profile (DRMP) is key to your success as a pharmacovigilance specialist. Without this essential document, there’s no way to identify, characterize, or manage risks associated with the drug or therapeutic in development. DRMPs aren’t required by law, but they can be invaluable in preventing headaches, especially for small clinical-stage companies. This Clinical Leader guest column covers everything you need to know: Source: https://hubs.li/Q02Cz9cv0 #developmentalriskmanagementprofile #DRMP #pharmacovigilance #drugdevelopment #clinicaldevelopmentplans #riskminimzationstrategies #riskidentification #riskcharacterization

Women-Owned Wednesday! This post pays tribute to Alma Levant Hayden, an American chemist and one of the first African American women to gain a scientist position at a scientific agency in Washington D.C. Hayden served at various agencies during her illustrious career, including the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Her research was instrumental in identifying the ingredients in Krebiozen, a controversial and expensive alternative cancer treatment. Although Hayden passed away in 1967, her legacy lives on to this day. More than 500,000 American men undergo vasectomies each year. The procedure has remained basically the same for the last 40 years, but that could change soon, thanks to a new medical device developed by Signati. Called the Separo, the device cuts and seals each part of the vas deferens (the tubes that carry sperm) in just 4 seconds. The tool aims to reduce procedure time and offer a minimally invasive treatment approach. Currently, Signati is enrolling patients in a clinical trial. Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are a leading cause of disability in the U.S., and a growing body of evidence suggests they may increase the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. For years, scientists have wondered if there was a way to slow down post-TBI neurodegeneration and now they may have an answer. Researchers at the University of Southern California (USC) have discovered that inhibiting a gene called KCNJ2 in a mouse model seems to protect brain cells from TBI-related changes. Specifically, it prevents the death of nerve cells, reducing the risk of long-term brain damage. Although these findings are from an animal study, scientists hope the same results will translate to humans. Women-Owned Wednesday! In today’s WOW installment, we’re paying tribute to Evelyn Nicol, an American immunologist and microbiologist best known for isolating the herpes zoster virus. Nicol was also one of the first African American women to receive a patent in molecular biology. Nicol retired in 1990 but spent the last 30 years of her life advocating for black biologists and microbiologists. Outside the lab, she was very active and enjoyed various hobbies, including oil painting, tennis, and bridge.
