Meet Stori Oates, our amazing Communications and Education Coordinator for the Alaska Fisheries Science Center’s Auke Bay Labs! Stori lives and works in Juneau, AK, on the traditional homelands of the Áak’w Kwáan Tlingit people. Growing up in Mission Beach, San Diego, CA, she spent her childhood exploring the outdoors and learning to identify local plants and animals. With 20 years of experience as a field biologist studying marine mammals and nearly 10 years as a high school science teacher, Stori brings a wealth of knowledge and passion to IBSS. She loves collaborating with NOAA scientists, local school districts and educators, and non-profit organizations to create culturally responsive and place-based education opportunities for students across Alaska.
