Do graphic title sequences still work today? First let's start here. This is my favorite frame from the Palm Royale title. Why is that? Well, it's nearly black and white. Most of the detail has been removed. It has an optical art sensibility, where sometimes you focus on the positive or negative space. The reductiveness of the image, easily tells you both the idea and time period it's from. It basically lacks everything we often see in frames. It's not flashy, ornate, 3D, slick, illustrative, or rendered. It isn't something that comes out of AI because of how specific and deliberate each shape and line is. That said, I do wonder if 'simple' can still hold people's interest. We're so immersed in the coolness of highly rendered and technically crafted images—is there still a place for reductive storytelling? Let me know your thoughts. Shout out to Robert Slychuk and Lexi Gunvaldson for bringing this project to life with me.
