Breaking News: Cybercrime Kingpin 'Tank' Sentenced to 18 Years Vyacheslav Igorevich Penchukov, aka "Tank," the mastermind behind the notorious Zeus malware gang, has been sentenced to 18 years in prison and ordered to pay over $73 million in restitution. This sentencing marks a significant victory against cybercrime, as Penchukov had eluded capture for over a decade. Jim Craig, one of Intel 471's own senior directors, who played a key role in the investigation, shared insights on the operation and its impact on law enforcement efforts against cybercriminals. Our very own Jim Craig of Intel 471 appears in this Wired story about the sentencing of "Tank" aka Vyacheslav Igorevich Penchukov. Penchukov was a key cybercrime figure going back to the banking malware days through to ransomware. He was instrumental in the spread of the Zeus/Jabber Zeus banking malware and then later in distributing IceID/Bokbot, a banking trojan turned loader that was used to distribute ransomware. Jim, a former FBI special agent, was in Ukraine in 2010 when authorities arrived at Tank's apartment to find he'd disappeared, and the Russian investigators who were supposed to help arrest him didn't show up that day. Penchukov was sentenced to nine years and will have to pay $73 million in restitution.

I spoke with radio station 6PR in Perth on Sunday about "Evil Twin" Wi-Fi attacks. Australian Federal Police charged an IT consultant with allegedly setting up rogue Wi-Fi hotspots on airplanes and in airports to collect personal information. The use of https has largely mitigated the risks of Evil Twin, but these alleged attacks were structured in curious way: asking people to log into their email or social media accounts via phishing pages in order to access free Wi-Fi.
