Lessons Learned from the ICSB World Congress 2024 and Fribourg Forum: The last week of June and the first of July, I had the pleasure of visiting different cities in Switzerland and Germany. In the next paragraphs, I would like to share some highlights. Business leadership: CEOs of some of the most important Swiss companies shared their experiences with ICSB members and were humble enough to listen to external ideas. Women leaders from DC shared their understanding of the relevance of career sponsorship and the difference with mentorship in the development of professional opportunities. Urban Tech: Cities that were once destroyed, like Magdeburg, demonstrate people's resilience and the importance of embracing local development to create more job opportunities for the community. The latest technology in virtual and augmented reality opens a new paradigm in urban public policies as a tool to connect new urban projects through a participatory process. At the Fraunhofer Institute, we had an immersive experience of how new energy towers in a German city could change the cityscape. Thanks to this technology, the inhabitants decided to approve the project because they saw how these new towers wouldn’t affect their view. Diversity, Culture, and Empathy: Sometimes a single conference can make a huge impact on your knowledge and point of view. Sometimes it is not only a keynote speaker, but a colleague from another country sitting next to you, who can share perspectives and business experiences relevant to your project. Sometimes the challenges are quite similar no matter where you are based, and more importantly, opportunities and new ideas come from those you least expect. In this journey, I learned about the uniqueness of different cultures, human expectations, and the importance of communication and international relations to connect with others while understanding their points of view. "Für ihre Präsentation und das zuvor eingereichte Paper erhielt das Team von #EntreCoThink den Best Paper Award in der Kategorie Practical Experience für den Beitrag Empowering K-12 Pupils: Fostering Problem-Solving Skills Through Sustainable Entrepreneurship and Computational Thinking. Darin wird beschrieben, wie im Rahmen von Hackathons eine Problemstellung aus dem Bereich Nachhaltigkeit mit den Problemlösungstechniken Design Thinking und Computational Thinking von Schülerinnen und Schülern gelöst wird. Das Ergebnis des Workshops ist eine selbstprogrammierte Smartphone-App die im Pitch vor einer Jury präsentiert wird. After almost 9 months of fascinating South African Cultural Observatory research on the early impact and perceptions of artificial intelligence on the South African cultural and creative industries (CCIs) and creative workers, practitioners and artists, we get to share some of the findings at the International Council for Small Business (ICSB) World Congress this week in #Berlin :) Ill be delivering a paper on "The Promethean Path? The Initial Effect of Artificial Intelligence on South Africa’s Creative Practitioners, Companies and Cultural Context." Excited to share super interesting insights and case studies from creative South African voices and companies who are adapting to, advocating for, or avoiding AI for altogether different reasons. AI will certainly impact the smallest of businesses and whole industries. Creative #MSME's are embracing its gains, but are still not sure if it represents a rushed revolution or holy grail. Love or hate AI, fear or embrace it, 89.1% of South African creatives think we need policy to regulate AI in the creative sector. What do you think? A great International Council for Small Business (ICSB) World Congress in Berlin this year. Got to reconnect with colleagues, present recent findings with Ellen Thomas on the relationship between investors and pivots, and promote the entrepreneurship education program at the Martin Tuchman School of Management at NJIT.  Euro Cup fever was palpable: the closing ceremony was interrupted by the Germany-Spain match (a nail-biter until an overtime header by Spain, about which I had to keep quiet because I was the only Spaniard in the building). Best Paper Award: Re-thinking Risk Management   Great week in Berlin at the International Council for Small Business (ICSB) 2024 World Congress. It was excellent meeting up with the ISCB family and making new friends to do research with. Christian Meisel and Dr. Hartmut Heinrich Meyer were amazing hosts. Welcome to a world of change and opportunity! Today's businesses face increasingly complex challenges, impacting not only established giants but also entrepreneurs and growth-oriented small enterprises. Prof. Dr. Ilka Heinze and I employed innovative approaches such as Storytelling and Lego Serious Play™ to give participants a playful yet profound understanding of risk and practical risk management tools. The learned concepts, which are helpful and immediately applicable, can be used to create risk models and develop corresponding risk profiles, empowering SMEs to manage risk effectively. Prof. Dr. Ilka Heinze Heinze and I won the Best Workshop award for our session, “Re-Thinking Risk Management.” Thanks to Ayman El Tarabishy Tarabishy and the workshop participants for their helpful feedback. Women Elevating Women™ at the @International Council of Small Business ICSB - Entrepreneurial Ecosystem Conference in Geneva was truly impactful. The theme of "Human-Centered Impact: Advancing the UN SDGs through MSMEs" resonated as we delved into historical roots and the path to a sustainable future. On the morning of 6/27, we were inspired by messages on "The Global Impact of MSMEs for a Better World," including insights from H.E. Martin Garcia Moritan, Ambassador to Uruguay, The Republic of Argentina, and Ki-Chan Kim, Chair of the Board, ICSB. Great meeting and listening to Matthew Wilson, Ambassador to the UN, Sonja Betschart , Chantal Line Carpentier, Analia Pastran, Prof. and Jack XIN YAO with ISO. Our journey continued to Fribourg, Switzerland, but not before we explored Campus Biotech at the Entrepreneurship Forum. Thank you Nicolas Durand for the guided tour. Absolutely phenomenal! Excited to share that I recently attended the International Council for Small Business (ICSB) 2024 Academy in Berlin, a city that established itself as a startup hub and a beacon of entrepreneurship in Germany. My journey with ICSB began as a student participant, and this year, I had the honor of contributing as a supporting student in the planning and execution of the Academy Program. From insightful keynotes to engaging workshops, I had the opportunity to connect with innovative minds and leaders. After all, I want to thank Dr. Hartmut Heinrich Meyer for making all this possible! 📣 Last week, I had the pleasure of presenting "The Student: Our Secret Weapon for the Entrepreneurship Ecosystem" with Norris Krueger, PhD, during the International Council for Small Business (ICSB) Berlin 2024. #ICSB2024 was truly the place to be for developing relationships and exchanges around student entrepreneurs and their ability to envision and develop desirable entrepreneurship. This new iteration of the future entrepreneur is beginning to stir interest within the scientific community. To adapt how we teach entrepreneurship and support these new entrepreneurs in developing their ideas and projects, we need to better understand the realities on the ground. During my stay in Berlin, I was able to exchange ideas with European colleagues to advance this concept and imagine a joint research program.
