JR Bechtle & Co.

This year I had the good fortune to again attend the #HannoverFair, #HM24, Germany’s premier industrial trade show. Many of JR Bechtle & Co. past and current clients were in attendance, so a great opportunity to check in and keep in touch. A special pleasure this time around was meeting up with our partner in China, Joe WEHRLE. His firm, Wehrle + Partner (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. supports the same #Mittelstand clientele as we do in his part of the world with executive recruitment. I was lucky enough to have spent a week with Joe in Shanghai a few years ago to celebrate his firm’s 10-year anniversary and have a working visit at his office. I was able to see first-hand the high quality of service he and his team offer their clients. The trip continued after the show, hitting the Autobahn for client visits in northern Germany. The weather unfortunately wasn’t cooperating, as summed up by a local shop which sells foul weather gear. 'Wetter', by the way, means 'weather' in German, while the beginning part should be decipherable to non-German-speakers 😊. At the end of the day it was time for some 'medicine' to fight a hellish cold not helped by the damp, frigid, and windy weather prevailing in Germany that week. There was also private family time in Hamburg, where an amusing sign was spotted. It warns potentially errant drivers not to park there. It goes beyond this simple message, though, adding the admonishment to those who still don’t get it, loosely translated: For drivers who only learned how to ‘sing’ and ‘clap’ in school, this is an entrance which cars drive into – parking is ‘verboten’. And who says Germans don’t have ‘humor’! The weather did change for the better as the trip extended southwards to the beautiful historical city of Aachen. Here a shot of the Aachen Cathedral, first consecrated in the year 805 A.D. and steadily added to over the centuries. Continuing down the Rhine I managed to be in Koblenz on the first of May, a holiday in Germany. A key landmark is the “German Corner”, the promontory where the Moselle (above) and Rhine (bottom) rivers converge. Shown is the view from a castle above the town which you reach by a cable-car. To the left of the point is a large statue of Kaiser Wilhelm I. Not to be passed up, a chance for an American to get a photo together with Kaiser Wilhelm I on his horse next to the goddess Viktoria. The statue was originally erected in 1897 and destroyed in World War II, and later fully restored in 1993. Also not to be passed up, the chance to have a #Kölsch in Koblenz, one of my favorite types of beer. The weather was finally warming up, the mood was good, and this first one really hit the spot.

My colleague Philip Legan and I enjoyed the 'German-American Business Outlook 2024' event this week. Sponsored by the German-American Business Council of Boston, Inc. and the German American Chamber of Commerce, Inc. in New York, it featured excellent speakers and panelists, and interesting guests who all braved the ‘big snowstorm’, or lack thereof, to make it into Boston. Good news: The outlook for business is quite positive. #GABC, #GACC, #GABO2024
