There were roughly 95 human-related incidents, including vandalism and cyber-attacks that led to electric disturbances in 2023, according to data reported by utilities. These types of events have been on the rise since 2000, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Microgrids are capable of acting as a standalone power source. If there were to be an attack on the grid, a microgrid could step in and operate autonomously and be isolated from the grid to continue to provide power to those who need it.
