Eli Lilly and Company’s donanemab, brand name Kisunla, is now FDA approved for treating Alzheimer’s disease. Like Eisai’s Leqembi, approved last year, Kisunla also clears amyloid plaques from the brain. But some patients might prefer the Lilly’s drug dosing regimen. “𝘞𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘉𝘪𝘰𝘨𝘦𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘌𝘪𝘴𝘢𝘪 𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘭𝘺 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘜.𝘚. Patient demand for GLP-1 #weightloss drugs is soaring, which has many pharma and biotech firms vying for a share of this market. Amylyx Pharmaceuticals is entering the #GLP1 space, but in a way that runs counter to most companies. Some bariatric surgery patients go on to develop a condition in which their bodies produce too much GLP-1 hormone after a meal. The dangerously low blood sugar that results leads to seizures and other complications. This rare condition, post-bariatric hypoglycemia (PBH), has no FDA-approved treatment. The in-demand obesity drugs Wegovy and Zepbound activate the GLP-1 receptor, sparking metabolic effects such as appetite suppression. Amylyx has acquired an experimental drug, #avexitide, that blocks the GLP-1 receptor to bring blood sugar back into balance. The company, which restructured earlier this year after the post-marketing trial failure and market withdrawal of the ALS medication that was its only commercialized product, contends Phase 3-ready avexitide fits its strategy of developing treatments for rare, unmet medical needs. Amylyx didn’t spend much for the drug, winning it for $35.1 million in Eiger BioPharmaceuticals’ bankruptcy. With avexitide, Amylyx joins a small group of companies developing GLP-1 antagonists for PBH. Recordati is in Phase 2 testing with pasireotide, acquired from Novartis. Vogenx recently reported positive Phase 2 data for the small molecule mizagliflozin. Meanwhile, MBX Biosciences has a peptide drug in early clinical development. https://lnkd.in/epneTzcj $AMLX #metabolicdisease
