Lucy's parents couldn’t afford to take her to the hospital for the tumor in her mouth, so they used local herbs to treat the condition — but to no avail. Lucy needed surgery. Without it, according to Mercy Ships volunteer surgeon Dr. Didier-David Malis, the tumor would continue to grow and would likely have threatened the 14-year-old's life. But hope was not lost. Lucy and her family remained resilient and hopeful, and on board the Global Mercy in Sierra Leone, she received her long-awaited surgery. The Clinical Dietician / Infant Feeding Coordinator provides nutritional care for patients in the Infant Feeding Program throughout the whole continuum of care, from pre- to post-op, making sure they’re healthy enough for surgery and that they continue to recover safely. A day of play became years of pain. Yusif was bitten by a snake when he was only 5 years old. By the time he was able to find a hospital, his arm was almost unusable. Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) is partnering with Mercy Ships to help bring life-changing surgical care to remote communities across sub-Saharan Africa! Thanks to MAF’s logistical support, Mercy Ships will be able to access hard-to-reach areas and transport patients in need of surgical interventions across Madagascar. Flying with MAF saves time for patient selection and allows Mercy Ships to follow up after patients return home. Nothing beats the joy that comes when hope is restored! Our volunteers at the Hospital Out-Patient Extension (HOPE) Center in Sierra Leone organized an evening to celebrate the hope and healing that transformed so many lives. The voices of patients, most of whom were still recovering from surgery, filled the atmosphere with warmth and gratitude.
