About half of the small and mid-sized businesses in the United States bank with JPMorganChase. The firm's analysis found that rising health care premiums are putting an additional strain on these companies, which has a real impact on their ability to thrive and serve their communities.
Here's a new op-ed in RealClearHealth that I co-authored with Christopher Wheat of JPMorganChase Institute on how small businesses can address affordability of health insurance offerings. Practically speaking, we advise: - Finding the best health insurance broker – who is knowledgeable of your business strategy and talent pool. Understanding how your broker is compensated is also important, and whether they are appropriately incented to improve value for your employees. - Evaluating alternative cost management strategies that curate networks (e.g., Centivo and Kaiser Permanente) or Individual Coverage Health Reimbursement Arrangement (ICHRA) to keep costs predictable while offering flexibility to employees. - Maximizing the benefits offered each year to ensure your employees are getting the most out of their options and fully understand what is available to them, particularly in areas like primary and preventive care, and care navigation that can reduce downstream cost for employees. Increasing cost of health insurance premiums is putting undue pressure on our nation’s smallest businesses. Over the past five years, premiums for small employers have increased a staggering 33%. National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) reports that about half of all small business owners reported taking a loss to address health care costs. JPMorganChase banks about half of the small and medium size businesses in the US, and Morgan Health is here to help. Molly Chidester is leading this work on our end – and we’ll be engaging in key markets across the U.S. in the coming months. Stay tuned. Emily Lindemer, PhD, who co-leads our health data team, says that while people most often talk about the clinical applications of AI in health care, we shouldn't underestimate the potential of new technology to relieve some of the administrative burdens that impact clinicians and patients.

Health coverage is a big expense - especially for small employers. New research from the JPMorganChase Institute found that smaller firms spent a higher percentage of their total revenue on health insurance than larger companies – presenting a competitive disadvantage. #smallbusiness

U.S. employers have an interest in making sure they're getting value for the money they spend on health coverage. Yet we learned that many don't have performance guarantees in place that tie payments to health care quality standards. Here, Fatema Salam delves into our research with X4 Health.
