The US Navy and #NAVSEA remains committed to quality-of-service improvements for our sailors and shipbuilders at Newport News Shipbuilding. Today, NAVSEA announces a contract modification for the planning, design, and construction of the Carrier Refueling Overhaul Workcenter for sailors’ and shipbuilders’ use while assigned to ships in Refueling and Complex Overhaul (RCOH) at Newport News Shipbuilding, A Division of HII (HII-NNS). The building will provide approximately 80,000 square feet of dedicated space near the ship that will include office spaces for sailors and shipbuilders, as well as a fitness center, counseling offices, and other areas sailors can utilize while executing RCOH. Construction is planned to complete in June 2026. The news to establish a dedicated work center for RCOH sailors follows last month's announcement that a new parking garage with more than 2,000 new parking spaces will be constructed in Newport News to help alleviate parking challenges. Named after United States Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone, who received the Medal of Honor for his extraordinary heroism during the Battle of Guadalcanal, DDG 122 will serve as a multi-mission surface combatant capable of conducting Anti-Air Warfare, Anti-Submarine Warfare and Anti-Surface Warfare. “The future USS John Basilone will bring significant capability to the fleet and strengthen our advantage at sea,” said Capt. #TheForceBehindTheFleet congratulates Hull Maintenance Technician 1st Class Petty Officer Jennifer Schleuning on her selection as the Navy Shore Sailor of the Year!!   Serving at the Southeast Regional Maintenance Center in Mayport, FL, Schleuning (pronounced like "shining," but with an "L") earned the title having competed against some of our Navy’s hardest chargers, distinguishing herself by contributing to the increased material condition readiness for 20 Mayport-based and visiting ships.    The Sailor of the Year program was established by the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations in 1972 to recognize Sailors from the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets who exemplify the Navy's professionalism and personal dedication. The program expanded to recognize one outstanding Sailor from all shore locations across the Navy in 1973 and introduced the Navy Enlisted Reservist of the Year award in 1982.    BRAVO ZULU, 1st Class Petty Officer Jennifer Schleuning!! Earlier today, Rear Adm. Todd M. Evans assumed command of the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) Warfare Centers during a ceremony at the Washington Navy Yard, relieving Rear Adm. Thomas J. Dickinson. The ceremony was presided over by NAVSEA Commander Vice Adm. James P. Downey and also included remarks from Dr. Brett A. Seidle, Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Research, Test, Development and Engineering – and a former executive director of the Warfare Centers. The NAVSEA Warfare Centers execute research, development, test and evaluation efforts for the future Navy as well as provide in-service engineering and logistics support for the operational surface and submarine forces. The keel for the future USNS Sojourner Truth (T-AO 210), a John Lewis-class fleet replenishment oiler, was authenticated at General Dynamics (GD) NASSCO in San Diego, June 21.
